cost of the hobby

And if you were to ever sell this fine model when finished, what do you think a fair asking price would be based on cost of supplies to build and manpower time and space costs at your location?

I have heard you can never sell a model for what you have really put into it based on your time as a skilled model ship maker.

Kurt
That’s why, for most of us at least, it’s called a hobby not a business.

In case you're curious, here is the full list of costs building HMS Sovereign of the Seas so far...

This list, so far, is only relevant to your particular built. And does not reflect at all the costs of building a kit.

All those extras are there because you decided to highly modify the kit.

SOS is full of amazing ships that have been built directly from the box or just slightly modified.

BTW, I will not include a tool that will be used for years to come.

All the best !!
Daniel

The cost of my hobby room, include the hobby itself are about the 1500 euro. I bought most of the tools on the fleamarket. Small stuff on Aliexpress and use scratch. Only my Proxxon MF70 and the Scheppach Basa 1 I bought new in the store. It took half the budget. Just stay patience and look for nice secondhand deals. Even making your tools by yourself is good for your wallet.
I bought on marktplaats.nl a Proxxon FET for 100 euro, 2 DB 250 for 140 euro, a drill press for 30 euro, electric scrollsaw for 50 etc.
A part of the money for the tools was a gift and I made also money writing for the modelbouwer that I use for the tools. I think it is about the 600 I paid out of my own pocket. That makes the cost for the past 3,5 years about 40 cents a day

i do not know where this is going but the future is looking a bit grim.
I noticed many orders cost as much as or more for shipping than the actual wood order. I am running low on steamed pearwood so i contacted my supplier. The cost of the wood is $1,200.00 the cost of shipping is $850.00 this almost doubles my cost to restock. Plus on an avarage there is a 20% waste factor to figure in.
How much can the hobby take in jacked up costs before hobbyists start saying NO! i will not pay $1,250.00 for a model kit or NO! to 5 sheets of pearwood for $110.00 which 1/2 of that is shipping. Actually 70% of the cost is shipping because i had to pay outragious shipping to get it and then you the customer has to pay an outrageous amount to get the reswan wood.

These last postings are very interesting but the ocean currents are taking all us out of the OP (quoted) that was mainly showing the high shipping costs that will be affecting all our budgets.

Cheers
Daniel

The cost of those plank on frame kits is insane. I know I’d never spend that much on a kit. Thing is I’d say 90% of the people why might want to build a ship will go for one of the older type plank on bulkhead kits because they don’t have the desire, don’t have the space, don’t have the tools or want to buy them and just plain old wouldn’t be able to scratch build anyway. Sure tools aren’t cheap but you can buy alot of tools for what a POF kit costs.
Shipping is insane. It’s the fuel cost now being passed on. Important thing to remember is place one order instead of 2 or 3 and buy as much as possible through Amazon with free shipping.
Lumber and construction materials are high still because of Covid in fact many many products are still affected by that too.

there are many circumstances with building a model. I built a 3/8 scale Tecumseth for under $100.00
1 i have all the tools needed
2 i used local wood so there was no shipping involved
3 i drew my own plans
my only cost was the laser cutting and i could avoid that by cutting all the parts out myself on my 10 inch bandsaw.

I have heard you can never sell a model for what you have really put into it based on your time as a skilled model ship maker.

For the Tecumseth model even though i have very little invested in materials the time from research, drawing and building adds up to hundreds of hours. I would never expect to get a reasonable wage for my time. I would have to ask $12,000.00 to $18,000.00 for the model. that is not something the average person will purchase and at that price it better be as close to perfect as you can get.
There is a hard line between a one of a kind original work of art and an off the shelf mass produced production product. An original Hahn ship model sells for $35,000.00 and up even a well done hand built reproduction starts at $10,000.00 and up depending on the model and quality of the build.
90% of this hobby is made up of kit builders, as the cost keeps going up up and away for raw materials, wages, shipping etc the cost of kits and the hobby are becoming something for only those who can afford it. The cost keeps going up but the end value of a model remaind the same which is 4 times the cost of the kit.

what attracts a would be model ship model builder is seeing that plank on frame model with lots of cannons, beautiful stern carvings and figurehead and that complex web of rigging. So you begin to search kits and soon realize the high cost plus shipping and the other taxes and charges and you do not even have the tools which is another big expense. If your goal is to build plank on frame then start out building plank on frame, a plank on bulkhead kit may sharpen your skills but it is a totally different animal than plank on frame and it does not teach you how it is done.

The cost of those plank on frame kits is insane. I know I’d never spend that much on a kit. Thing is I’d say 90% of the people why might want to build a ship will go for one of the older type plank on bulkhead kits because they don’t have the desire, don’t have the space, don’t have the tools or want to buy them and just plain old wouldn’t be able to scratch build anyway. i am building this plank on frame model with nothing more than a few magnets, rubber bands, a Dremel tool, razor saw and exacto blades. As far as taking up space it is not much bigger than my lap top computer. Rather than making expensive, complex high end kits the new idea is making simple, affordable and fun projects end result is a quality plank on frame model. How do you cut costs and not quality? well first there is no fancy printed box, no 100 page instruction manual, no printed plans, no need for expensive tools. downloadable frame drawings and on line build log replaced printed instructions in any language by using Google translate.

We have the inovative thinking and technology to move this hobby forward and affordable.

Is Bradford Pear any good for model wood? I just saw a video that says South Carolina is trying to eliminate this species. They are offering a bounty to people that cut it down.

Personally, I believe it is much easier to place a price on a kit built model than a heavily modified one or scratch built one. It's easy to put a price figure on materials, but the time, not so much. Much less the satisfaction and sense of accomplishment gained from building it. I would probably not sell my model, unless I had an offer from some private buyer who shared the same love for these old ships that I do. It would be difficult to come up with a fair price. They only way would be by finding out what someone is wiling to pay, which means researching the results of those few model sales are out there.

Is Bradford Pear any good for model wood? I just saw a video that says South Carolina is trying to eliminate this species. They are offering a bounty to people that cut it down.

it is one of the top woods for model building very fine texture and a gold color.

Ohio also banned the tree because like Walnut the Bradford Pears kills all other plants around it and takes over. They are a small tree with a trunk maybe 4 feet and the biggest i have seen is about 9 inch diameter.

Not a lot of wood in each tree then. Still, I managed to build the Discovery with Hazel and the largest trunk was 4" so it can be done.

Its that high because you're buying every part. making the parts would be cheaper. sure you need raw materials but the cost is much lower. Also if that's a kit why are you buying so many more parts ? Tools don't count as that's an initial investment in any hobby. I agree Dave. People want to start at the top. It doesn't work. 99.9% of those who buy an expensive 64 gunner as a first model either don't finish it at all or in the end its so bad its hardly a ship model. In fact that number is very high for all types of ship kits not just big gunners. Either people have the aptitude and manual dexterity and are capable of working with their hands or they don't, most don't as I'm sure we've all seen.

I agree. If tools enter into the equation then my first model ship cost way over $100k just for tools.
Where do you draw the line? The cost of your home where your build takes place. The cost of your automobile because you used it to pick up a few parts?
Now of course if you’re using these costs for tax purpose’s claiming you are a ship builder :)

cost of tool would count if you are just getting into the hobby.

if say you built plactic model kits and now you want to get into wooden ship models, first you need the tools and that depends if you are planning to build from scratch then you need power tools up front or build from kits. So lets say the "startup costs" in this hobby can get expensive. At one time the question was how to get a younger generation into the hobby? i believe it is not lack of interest or lack of information the internet is cram packed with information. I think the issue is the hobby is just to expensive. When it cost $80.00 for gas to fill your tank and $320.00 at the grocery store the last thing on the list is a $600.00 model kit plus another $100.00 for shipping.
We can not change the cost of shipping that is in the hands of big brother but we can tweek the hobby to make it a bit more affordable.

i just got caught up in a "refund" i bought an item off Ebay for $20.00 and it was not what i expected so the seller said send it back and i will refund your $20.00 ya right! it cost me $14.00 for postage to send it back.

i can not count the cost of tools because over the years i have collected enough tools to scratch build models. As a matter of fact i am on my second round of tools, those little hobby size tools are not a long term investment they burn up because they are light duty or occasional use. One by one all those hobby size tools ended up in the trash and replaced.

Agree but if we want to play we have to pay. nothing is free. I was fortunate I had the majority of the tools needed before I got into wooden ships as I had done other modeling in different materials. What I didn't have I bought over time when I needed it. I am a tool guy, have worked with tools of all type's since I was a kid and through my career so having the right tool for the job is key. At this stage of the game I still have to buy more tools, a Proxxon Mill and a larger mini table saw. If I want to scratch build a full ship now I need them.
Getting young people or old into the hobby depends on many factors not just cost. Todays young people aren't interested in history which is usually the main reason we start modeling old things be it trains, planes or ships. They are however interested in electronics and they like RC stuff hence most hobby shops are 90% RC. Kids today just don't get the satisfaction out of building something that in the end is static. As I said before though, someone entering the hobby doesn't need or really want a 3 masted big gunner. There are kits in a reasonable price range that can be build with a minimal investment in tools. Take advantage of all the sellers on amazon, shop price for shipping if you must pay to ship.
All in all our hobby is very very small in the big picture. We're a tiny community, not just wooden ships, all modeling. The majority of people cant fathom what we do and why. That's societal.
