Soleil Royal - Heller 1/100 Back to work!

#Looks nice!these strops, even without soldering... but wire could be first cutted , rounded as needed /or rounded and cutted and soldering, than deadeye fitted in?
#painting...in add. to " sponge" technique...
You could try to use thin metal brush when applying final coat of paint/stains for wood structure imitation... ? it works pretty good for making these" wooden grains" on plastic...I used acrylics all the time...they drying fast, very handy...
post 378 and a few above

Hi kirill4, I guess one can make the strop solder it and then fit the deadeye, but there is no need for that in my view, this is so small that the CA works perfectly.

I’ll try your way of simulating wood on plastic..

The bowsprit mast and top is ready to paint!

Lot’s of ”educated” guesses regarding the sprit topmast futtocks, I ended up basing it on L’Ambitieux monograph, and consider deadeyes with strops secured by iron plates bolted to the side of the bowsprit.

Any comments are welcome!

I would like to comment: this is just spectacularly well-done, Duarte! From what material did you fashion the “iron” strops? This looks so awesome, I will definitely be attempting to replicate it. Will you make the sprit topmast from brass rod, as well?

I am always amazed when plastic kit builders manage to rig a stock plastic sprit mast without deforming it. I will not be taking any such chances, myself. Either brass or wood.

Thanks Marc!

The strops were made from 0,3mm cooper wire (that one for the electric motors winding).

Yes, I’ll try to make the sprit topmast from brass rod as well, here it is the first attempt:

I’m also trying to make the Jack Staff, but this is s small, from 1,28mm in the base to 0,90mm in the top! A real challenge to make it from brass rod…

I’m hop that all this effort pays off in rigidity when I start the rigging procedures!

Hello Duarte
Excellent work here.

I have 1 question: you are showing a few pages with bowsprit rigging.
Can you please let me know what is this book? It seems very interesting.
I appreciate it

Hi Gilbert,

The first book is:

CA031C31-5CB3-4F4D-B574-815545214947.jpeg

This is of course for English ships, but there are many common ideas that one can adapt…

The second one is:

CE265656-CE0D-4F07-B26C-ADBC47E320D5.jpeg

This book from Dr. Anderson is truly amazing for rigging works on the end of the 17th century, and explains the differences between French, Dutch and English practices mainly. Very interesting.

I hope this helps.

Beautiful work!

I’m trying to figure out how bowsprit “horses” or “footropes” were laid up in the bowsprit mast, I understand that they were used to support the crew climbing the bowsprit mast, but that’s about it! I cannot really understand how they were installed, was it a single rope on one side of the mast, or was it two ropes one each side, giving more support?

Could it be something like this?

Bellow is about all the info that I have regarding this subjet:

CBFEFF70-5F2A-4D59-957D-0E37DE68221B.jpeg4BB85F34-31B7-4CD9-81D1-F371AD9E53AD.jpegCEB68F21-5F31-4DB4-AC24-752E83FE65F6.jpeg

Does someone have any extra info on this? I greatly appreciate it!

Good day!
May be just show it as a piece of secured rope, both end secured, and at one point in the middle...as shown in illustration of Albom de Colbert poz.133 and/ or Anckre book? ,
but don't give too much details of it...
this element is not shown on non of Van de Velde drwngs for example...
Most important ,I think ,will be to show gammoning protection clothes? Which is reproduced/ could be seen on almost every old pictures...

Hi Kirill, yes, I think this is a detail that doesn’t show up very much. I can only imagine hiw difficult it was at rough sea climbing a bowsprit mast without any kind of support…

What you mean by gammoning protection clothes?

Hi,
I'm not sure, what is correct name of this part...
