Last week I was fortunate to make a sailing trip on the Stad Amsterdam from Rotterdam to Hamburg. The Stad Amsterdam is a Dutch build clipper ship from 2000 owned by Randstad and the city of Amsterdam. She is used for sea voyages and promotional activities for the joined owners. You can book sailing trips or even luxury cruises.

I luckily was in time to join this 4 day adventurous sailing trip from Rotterdam to Hamburg under full sail during beautifull weather. Joining the watch system and for me the 12.00 -4.00 watch during the night and day was a fantastic experience.
During the watch you help to set sails, trim sails, remove sails, stand on the look out or on the wheel.
You get training on deck how to sail and set sail on a square rigged ship. You also get climbing training to get into the rigging, on longer trips you can eventually help on the yards.
It is a wonderfull experience and you make a lot of new friends. I will certainly try to again join them in the future.

Diring the morning briefing I heared somebody saying my name from the shore and there was our friend @Ptèr who lives close to the Rotterdam berthing of the ship.

See below some of my pictures.

Great impressions - I love it
Many thanks for sharing these photos with us - it is somehow a little bit like we were also on board of this vessel during the trip.
Do you know, how many real crew they have - means stamm-manschaft?
Hi Uwe,

They do have a total crew of 28 people, incl 1 captain, 2 engineers, 3 mates, 1 hospitality manager, 2 cooks, 2-3 hospitality service, 1 hotel service, 1 boatswain, 3 quartermasters and the rest able seaman, seaman and cadets.

Combined with up to 32 passengers.

Once upon a time - I think in the beginning of the 2000s - we (the Krusenstern ex Padua) sailed against the Stad Amsterdam in a Tall Ship Race from Bergen/Norway to Esbjerg/Danmark. It was Beaufort 6/7 and the guys treated her as a racing yacht. We landlubbers feared she could capsize. She won.
If you can take part in a tall ship race - do it! I will never forget the sight of about a dozen of square riggers assembling at the starting point when the sunset-sun lightens the sails.
Dear Maarten, I envy you.

And thought getting to know the Boeing 747 was difficult! Nothing compared with getting to "know the ropes" on a clipper ship I would wadwe!!

Hi Karl Ingwer,

I have seen the sign commemorating this on board in the lobby. She is one of the fastest tall ships in the world. Maximum speed she reached was over 19 nautical miles.

These are actually no treenails but plugs. The wood is most probably glued on the steel deck.
Yes - plugs or better bungs made by the same wood like the planking and the grain in the same direction - therefore more or lass not visible.
I am not sure, if the planks were glued or I think fixed with screws - if glued no plugs would be necessary

Back in 2011 Stad Amsterdam came to Baltimore and I went into the city to see her.
I took pictures with a modeler in mind, not that I ever intend to do such a model, and shared them on another forum back then.
Maybe they can be of help to some one now.
