Mary Rose 1512-1545 from Caldercraft [COMPLETED BUILD]

Actually when I went and checked the pre rigging I had done on the masts I found a couple more wrongly threaded....no excuses but i do sometimes find it difficult to thread them, so appreciate the heads up..Thumbsup

Great work John, she is coming together quite nicely.

I hope you don't mind, but looking at your last pictures it looks as if the sheets, lanyards or whatever are guided through the wrong side of the blocks; the ropes are running through the side indicated with the orange arrow, whereas I think they should run through the other side, marked with the blue arrow:

It's something I did on another model and couldn't change it anymore without a lot of rework, so to my utter shame it's still there. As a result I became a bit allergic to these kind of hiccups...

Kind regards,

Johan
How is the sail supposed to catch wind if the sheets are so tight that the cloth is almost horizontal? I've seen this done on other models, usually galleons. What am I missing here?

i guess they set the sails in this fashion to catch the rain to replenish their freshwater stocks.
(Don't know if it's true, I like the story, though...)

Retrieving that water would seem like a problem though...
Well, set up a living chain from the bowsprit to the fresh water barrels, a couple of buckets and off to work, let's go.

(As a young lad I once learned that the crews of these days used sails to collect rain water, when their fresh water stocks either ran out or became otherwise unpotable. How the sails were set to accomplish that feat, I don't know, but John's picture shows how that could have been accomplished.)

Have reviewed my earlier photos many of which were wrong and had been changed am posting corrected ones. I had actually made a full set of sails using the kit yards as a base for size then taking the AOTS sail plan dimensioins to scale to the model. Should have worked but the sails were clearly too small so cut them off and dumped them...very frustrating...made new ones to look sensible, cant defend the actual measurements but they are similar to some other completed models I have pictures of.

was not at all happy with Mizzen topsail and Bonaventure topsail so have redone several times getting it looking satisfactory a bit like a few modelled examples although it is all guesswork as we keep remembering above the gunwales. I have a coulour print of the Anthony roll view above my desk and am constantly reminded of how much this nice ship is NOT actually the Mary Rose. I am starting to think I might sell this one and repeat the build with the Anthony Roll image as my goal...need to really think about that.
I wanted to include the anti boarding netting but it is proving very difficult to buy netting suitable to the job. The finest millinery netting on ebay out of China is light enough but way over scale in mesh size. Might use it anyway but it really is pretty wrong..!

Th effort it takes to go back and fix something that didn't meet your expectations it always worth it because after the model is finished, it would have been the thing that you always look at forever with a frown. Making it better is the quality of a dedicated modeler.

have found it impossible to buy suitable netting for the anti boarding netting then found some leftover cargo netting from my first ever build Artesania Sanson Tug. It is not perfect but it is satisfactory. About 5mm squares which scales up to 40mm ..the real protective netting would have been finer than that but I cant weave 3mm net.

Well it is finished (sort of) because I neglected to do the topmast shrouds when building the masts as I should have, and now have had several failed attempts to do them at the end with the main shrouds. I dont like moving on and leaving them off but unless I get some bright idea that is where it rests. Good fun to build, I added sails, a Tudor Rose, and anti boarding netting and colour with only minimum sail handling rigging but the kit defined spar running rigging.
