Other hobbies that are not ship model building

Strange idea to see those wapens you ordering in the USA. In the Netherlands and most country around us, it is not allowed to have a weapon. Even if it is a replica of plastic, it is forbidden.

As an enthusiastic Dutch cyclist:
Today at 12:00: The NK Tegenwindfietsen / DC HeadWind Cycling.
If you are in a hurry, you might be able to participate in the NK Tegenwindfietsen today at 12 noon. Not boisterous enough in the morning. The organization assumes wind gusts of up to 88 kilometers per hour.
2 days ago it was decided that it could continue due to the storm Ciarán that is partly raging over the Netherlands today. If less than Bf6 this Dutch Championship does not happen:

(PS: It’s not me on the picture!)
It is held on the famous ‘Oosterscheldekering’ and it is 8.5 kilometers straight against the wind on standard Dutch bikes without gear and a ‘coaster brake’ (pedal push back).
So, one of the positive thing about a storm.
And you have directly a beautiful view on this ‘New Dutch Monument’:

PS: This event has a serious organization. They made this statement:
"The event benefits from being on the edge," says Stoekenbroek, "because it is cycling against the wind. However, we do have a serious safety emergency plan. The intention is that we will find the participants again at the finish and not that blow them off the barrier." He says it jokingly, but he means it seriously. Safety is paid close attention. "On the one hand, people have to decide for themselves whether they feel comfortable with it and we take responsibility as an event. If it turns out that it is crazy and we place people in unsafe situations, then we will do something about it."

This was in 2022:
Regards, Peter
Who was the guy telling it was to windy to go on his motorcycle to the Balder?. ROTF

PS I joined the competition but cycled in the opposite direction

I'm from the UK.
Here we don't have weapons. Well that's not true, there are a very limited number, heavily legislated.
We too have our 'hunting and shooting' set, the justification being 'farmers' need them to destroy what they call vermin, yet the regulations allow target shooting, clays or captive bred poultry 'game birds. That's about the legal limit.
Nearly all wildlife is protected by law.
The criminal fraternity are a a part of any society; here they get hold of illegal firearms and mostly shoot each other, which I welcome, they deserve each other.
Today I stumbled on some recent posts here covering weapons.

As an outsider, like most of the rest of the world, it seems Americans are their own worst enemy. Your biggest threat is your next door neighbor. Your fellow citizens massacre more of their own, far more (by a long way) than any outside terrorist threat.

This is one reason why most of the rest of the world have an existential dislike of Americans, good or bad.

I for one find it deeply disturbing to find personal weapons being 'promoted' on a Forum concerned primarily with model ships. For that reason I am now considering withdrawing my membership.

Anyone giving me 'the finger' for expressing my views will guarantee me leaving.

I feel we are truly all about model ships and world wide nautical history on this site. However, I do respect everyones' interest in what ever hobbies they may have aside from model ship building. Let us not forget the friendship and the assistance we have shared with each other because of this site, and it would be tragic to lose any of our members.

Jim

Well, the thread title does speak for itself... started by a staff member. And, as long as it's kept non-political and non-personal, I feel no reason not to share a hobby I have enjoyed all my life. My father got me into competition shooting at a very young age, which I pursued through my college years, nearly making the '92 Olympics in Barcelona. Target shooting, sporting clays, & reloading are things I still have a strong passion for, do so in a very safe manner, and in no way see as any sort of endorsement for violence.

Hello
We are a large community of model builders and everyone has their own hobbies, everyone grew up differently, there are gay and lesbian communities, there are different religions, there are different views, some collect weapons, others coins or chewing gum, some build Model ships and many also build warships, for example the Bismarck, everyone is different but that doesn't make them bad people. And if I don't like a post, so what, I don't have to answer. My father always said "I don't care what a person's views or beliefs are. He can worship an old stinky sneaker for all I care, as long as he leaves me alone and doesn't hurt anyone." So let's pursue our hobby and enjoy it.

Gents,

I understand the sensitive discussion above, it is a clash between different cultures in Europe and US and most probably one we won t solve with discussions here on the forum. Most probably there are also other topics we greatly disagree on, but that should not be a reason to dislike each other and share a great hobby on which everybody agrees.
Luckely there are a lot of different cultures otherwise the world would be a boring place, but lets agree to respect each others cultures and opinions allthough you might not agree with them.

Let me just say, viewing these gun posts deliberately or by accident could well result in a visit from an armed response unit, your door destroyed and you being arrested under current anti-terrorist laws, here in the UK.
The authorities have a 100% intolerance policy, which I agree with.
To me gun ownership IS a political subject.
I don't regard it as a healthy hobby.

It was not my intention to open a discussion here about real firearms. I thought it was a strange hobby because here in the Netherlands it is now forbidden. But when I see and read the discussions here I can also imagine that people feel unpleasantly surprised by this kind of hobby. While for your own feelings this does not have to be out of place at all. After all, we should not dismiss the purpose of real guns under the guise of: "it's a hobby". The true purpose of these weapons is to kill, human or animal. Of course there are shooting clubs where people shoot at cards or I know what else is available. Harmless and for fun perhaps. Or one collects antique weapons simply because one is impressed for the craftsmanship, something that appeals to me as well. But apart from that, perhaps it is appropriate not to share certain hobbies if they may be offensive to another. Nor does a lover of SM share here pictures of his basement full of whips, handcuffs and cages. Let us all share only the hobbies we are sure will make another person feel good. And in my opinion, that does not include real firearms. Furthermore, I would like to encourage everyone to continue to share their hobbies here in complete freedom, but also to keep in mind each other's feelings. Sorry for opening this discussion, but perhaps it is also good that it is discussed once to see what is or is not allowed.

A firearm is like a knife or saw. It is a tool that can be used for good or evil. I have had some for almost 50 years and I can guarantee you that none of them has killed or even hurt anyone (not including getting a finger caught in the action :) ). It is an inanimate object that is not able to think or act on it's own.

Well said.

I've killed quite a few trees over the years. Well, not exactly the trees but the paper targets made from them ;)

Many people here build models of large war machines, admittedly mostly from previous centuries, but equally it was ships that killed many people.

Who's that following you home? Hiding round the corner? Already in your home?
Be quick on the draw and ask questions later.
Just in case your trigger finger gets trapped, hope you miss your foot.
Great health system you have.
Oh yea, you don't have one.

ubjs.
They are models!

There again, only last week, here an armed police unit (ARU) took down an 8 year old playing with a water pistol in the street; and another guy walking by the road carrying a metal plumbing pipe.
Another kid was seen through his home window 'looking like he has a gun'.
An ARU demolished his front door. (he was playing on his X-box).
