Found in a thrift shop this morning for 15 euros. Of course it's a reproduction of some kind, although I can't make out exactly what it is. (Anybody?) My estimate is it's 50 to 75 years old..
Thanks to Google Images I have found out this is a painting by Ambroise Louis Garneray depicting the Battle of Navarino, fought on 20 october 1827 in the Ionian Sea during the Greek War of Independence.
What makes it special is that this was the last major naval battle to be fought entirely with sailing ships.

A nice find
Seems that the original painting is slightly bigger - cut slightly on the left and right, maybe to fit into the framing

I hadn't noticed that yet. The composition of the original is clearly more balanced. The reason for cropping the painting obviously lies with the rounded corners of the original. I now also have an explanation for the absence of a signature that in the original is in the left bottom corner.
