A video recently came up in my feed, so I thought I would take a break from the ship and give it a go. Whilst I have a couple of sets of grinders I needed a burr to seriously shift some material so I got this -

Then off to the log pile for a piece of oak -

I roughed out the shape of a nose, eyes and moustache with a Sharpie and got started -

Obviously, oak is a hard carve, but the Kutzall cutter coped well. It also works well on skin and knuckles. Roughing out completed -

After a couple of hours carving deeper on the hair/beard and smoothing -

That's my version of a woodland spirit for the garden - and The Boss likes it. I enjoyed this little project and learned a lot. Total time spent was two days. I am told that I will be doing some more in the future - what have I started?!.

I finished a second carving in time for Christmas and you might be wondering how they turned out. Probably not, but here they are. The finish is a light stain and a couple of coats of weatherproof lacquer because they will be going outside.
