Very enjoyable read. How on earth did they manage, in the 1680s, to recover guns from a wreck 85 feet down? No diving suits then!
They had diving bells. This surprised me when I visited the Wasa museum, it described how these were used (open bottom or "wet" bells). I don't know how they handled them, but they were in use in the mid-17th century.
