On the 12th of September 1944 two ANZAC squadrons from coastal Command attacked German shipping in the Marsdiep, between Den Helder and Texel in the Netherlands. An unfinished Germen destroyer (Flottentorpedoboot Type 1940) was under tow from its shipyard near Rotterdam to Prussia. Australian Beaufighters from 455 squadron attacked the ship and her tug, while New Zealnad Beaus from 489 squadron supported them by distracting the haevy German flak. The Australian onboard camera shot a picture of the burning tug and the smoking hulk, which I used for a small (20x20cm) diorama of the attack, honouring thse brave boys. The German destroyer was remodelled from the old Airfix Tribal-class 1:1250 kit, the old Tamiya harbour set provided material from which the tug was made. The German Kriegskutter, sperrballons and the city of Den Helder were scratch built from wood, while the cockpit of the Beaufighter was scratch built from metal with PE parts for the instrument bezels
