1851 yacht America navigation

After a lot of study of yacht America info, I deduce in 1851 it had no compass? If this is true, then navigation was by sextant? Having stared at the simple tiller for so long, finally dawned. Any thoughts on this?

At a guess, I'm sure it had a compass but probably not a binnacle. The compass was probably an exquisitely crafted unit kept in an equally nice box and brought out when needed. Rich men like their toys!
