The final planking works are done and the hull is closed - on one side, the other side will stay open to see the framing

the last planking strip towards the bow is prepared for inserting

Next will be the treenailing of the hull - 55 frames with 24 rows of planking and 2 nails per frame / plank connection => slightly more than 2.600 treenails

ONLY 2.600 treenails !!!

Could be worse - if it would be the L´Amarante it would be 5.200 nails only for the half hull

I need some more packages of toothpicks - many thanks for your interest .... to be continued ......
Very well done. That is a great example of how to plank a ship's hull. l would be very happy if l could do that

Sur le net, on trouve plusieurs types de CLOU. Est-ce que c'est ce produit que vous avez utilisé pour teinter votre 'Granado' ? si non pouvez vous me communiquer une photo du bidon du produit que vous avez utilisé.

On the internet, there are several types of NAILS. Is this the product you used to tint your 'Granado'? If not, can you send me a photo of the container of the product you used.

Terrific planking job, very nicely done!
I probably missed it somewhere, but is there a rationale for your plank overlaps; I noted from two- to eleven frames overlaps. Is that based on the presumed availability of the necessary length of planks during the original build?

I will make only one pair of treenails per bend - but would be very interested in any resource where something else is written - the resources Christian mentioned are showing not really anything else - the only different way was shown in Gerards Rochefort monograph ......

From technical view an overlapping is helping for the stability and stiffness of a hull - with this also helping for a better watertightness of such a planking
And the real shipwrights had to work with available trees and boards -> so I guess it was often a day-to-day consideration and compromise......

There is a lot written about the "overlapping" of plank splices, so I read somewhere that Dutch shipwrights didn't pay too much attention to logic and symmetry; they used whatever was available. This more likely than not ended up in a very random pattern of plank splices.
Maybe later on more attention was paid to the overlaps, but I am not knowledgeable enough to say anything sensible about that.

Hello Uwe,
the nailing pattern of the French ships is actually the same on all ships. Under the whale you have four nails per plank and per double frame, two iron nails and two wooden nails alternating. Above the whales there are only iron nails but also four per plank and double frame.
I don't have double frames for Naiad, HMS Euraylus and the Ehrenpreis, so unfortunately I can't help you here.
