Re: Royal William 1/48 scale

I installed an arched window frame on the inside, whereas I have installed square frames on the out side, I wish now that i had waited for the arched frames before installing the square ones to the transom, it would be too messy to change them now,

1247.jpg
I've attached the trims for the top of the galleries,

1248.jpg
I've also thickened the transom piece and added some extra decorations,

1249.jpg
view from the side,

1250.jpg
adding the arches I used the same way as making the poop deck rail, and upright trims and also the top rail trim,

1252.jpg
The balustrades for stairs arrived, i bought two types and ended up using the ones on the left,

1253.jpg
I wanted a round knob on the top of the balustrade so i sanded down the pointed part X and ended up with the part marked Y, then i cut off the bottom part and ended up the the small balustrade,

1254.jpg
shows the small balustrade where it will eventually be glued, also i wanted a longer balustrade to go on the other side and reach above the small gangway,

1255.jpg
so i made another small balustrade and trimmed another part and drilled it and fit them together with with some CA Super blue and a piece of copper wire,

1259.jpg
This is how I drilled the parts, they are very tiny, I started a small hole in the end of the balustrade then very carefully held the part and drilled the hole for the copper wire to fit into, these balustrades are only 3mm at the widest, luckily I didnt have any breakages,

1256.jpg
and the parts glued together,
1257.jpg
and where it will finally sit,

another view before painting and gluing in place,

Started planking the top of the poop deck cabin,

1265.jpg
a few awkward curves but should be ok after a good sanding,

1266.jpg
and a couple of views, willgive it a good sanding tomorrow when the glue is dry,

I wanted to try and cut the topping wood for the transom out of one piece, so first i made a template of the transom,

1274.jpg
after cutting it out ,

1275.jpg
and testing for fit, needs a little bit of a clean up, next is the hard part, to cut the same width to form the top plank, the wood I'm using is thicker than needed so I can shape the transom curve, I just realized that i have some brass strip of the right thickness and width that i could form the five pieces needed, ah well that can be plan B,

Marking out for the rough thickness of the top rail,

1277.jpg
and after cutting out, still some sanding and cleaning up to be done,

1278.jpg
checking for fit, and marking out the roundness across the with,

1279.jpg
once I had shaped the roundness to the back of the rail I used my vernier to lightly scribe the width of the rail and obtain the roundness for the front of the rail,

1280.jpg
after a bit more of a clean up,

1281.jpg
and the rail finally shaped fore and aft,

1282.jpg
and the rail in position,

1283.jpg
and another view, I might thin it down a bit more yet and the ends have to taper into the gilded carvings on each side,

Thanks once again for dropping in,

Best regards John.

An impressive solution to a complicated piece! Way to go John! I'm taking notes...

It seems, that this way is working well - I think you are on a very good way

1284.jpg
I marked the middle of the transom for fixing the flag staff and the other stern timbers,

1285.jpg
temporary fitting,

1286.jpg
and after painting and gluing in place,

1287.jpg
I have decided that i do not like the twelve upper stern windows and I am going to replace them with windows that have curved tops, I'm hoping they will give a bit more definition to the transom,

1288.jpg
these are the ones I will use, the two types in the middle, they are the right width and I can cut the height down to suit,

thanks for looking in,

best regards john,
