Hi all, I am very new to model ship building with sails and rigging, (I have a 1/35th scale HMS Bronington M1115 which I scratch built from a plan and a fibreglass hull back in 1989)
I was recently presented with a half finished model of the East India cargo ship the Farquharson, however, all I have is the hull with the decks fitted, 3 masts and a couple of photocopied sheet with some rigging diagrams.
Does anyone know if this ship was from a kit or where I can find out more details on this? I’ve tried the classic Google and Bing but get swamped with photos and information of other ships!
Are there any good suppliers for parts and the threads needed for the rigging, or is it standard cotton tread used on sewing machines?
As I mentioned, I’ve only just started in this (8 weeks to be exact) so it’s all a bit daunting at present! Any help or advice would be appreciated, also, are there any clubs where people can go to build these ships? (In Oxfordshire, UK)
Thank you, I’ve been going through a lot of the topics etc learning a lot of new tricks, and I’m amazed at all the skills for something so small and intricate in this online group!

The Honourable East India Company's Ship Inglis... leaving St Helena, in July 1830 In Company with H.M. Frigate Ariadne and the H.C.Ships Windsor, Waterloo, Scaleby Castle, General Kidd, Farquharson & Lower Castle

Hand-coloured. The 'Ariadne' shown here will be the the 20-gun vessel of 1816. The ‘Scaleby Castle’ is likely to be the ship of that name launched at Bombay in 1798, which made three voyages for the EIC under charter before being sold to William Moffat and undertaking a further four-voyage contract with the EIC. The EIC purchased then the ship outright in 1816.

and maybe most important for you

It seems, that the NMM has six original technical drawings of the ship

Folder

6 plans of East Indiaman FARQUHARSON (1820). Catalogued on Access DNG0001 - DNG0006, now on Mimsy with the same DNG references (J. Michell, 6 November 2006).

Usually these drawings were done in scale 1:48 and copies in the same size can be ordered from the NMM

f.e. one sheet has the size Sheet: 518 mm x 1172 mm

These are the six abvailable drawings of the original ship

Sorry for the delay in responding, thank you all for the welcome and information, gives me a lot to work through! :)
Are there suppliers of components for 1/96th scale sailing ships? I’ve found several which caters for modern vessels, I know this is probably cheating haha, but my skills and eyesight are not what they used to be!
Thanks again….

There are many suppliers that you can get components from. Many of them are sponsors of our site here. Many different parts such as blocks, cannons, rigging line, cleats and even resin ovens are available at Drydock Models. Blocks are available at HiS models and Model Expo and many others. Rigging line is available at Ropes of Scale. I'm sorry that I did not list them all, but we have too many for me to remember them all. :) Just go to the initial forums page and look along the left hand border for the list of merchants. :)

This is the ship I’d been given after starting the HMS Peregrine kit which I’d also received as a present.
I’d never made a model like this, but after spending a couple of days reading a lot of the articles on the forums here about planking the frame, I felt confident enough to have a go…I was then given this hull in the state seen here, but no information on the mast and rigging setup. I think I’ll try and finish the HMS Peregrine kit first….. PS the cannon was one I made in 1976 at school, when they still had a metal work department…and used to “fire” cut up firework’s 3E50E93A-17DC-4634-9303-14A156C07627.jpeg71F2280D-8581-4890-89E5-63AE22164313.jpeg36B36C98-9B61-4189-97BE-F8A5704264F0.jpeg71BEF4ED-D18F-4E8F-A563-387B9F6D29E8.jpeg30F61F47-D902-4A08-A81B-07954CD0F997.jpeg70464806-7F20-458C-AE41-D9272A42BFCF.jpegE103CB13-128A-4281-AA71-9087C21521A2.jpeg0747EB19-3EA4-477B-AEA5-652249ED38B9.jpeg
