1:48 scale POF HMS Alert by Keith [COMPLETED BUILD]

Hi guys. More WIP pics for you. Lower rails on both sides are now almost done. l've got the fit as best as l can, there is a lot of very minor adjustment to each rib to fine tune the fitting of the rail sections and have left the trickiest to fit (extreme bow and stern) sections until last. The remaining ribs sticking up can then be filed down to their correct heights and the upper rails and gun ports will be attached. Looking forward to this part as it really gives shape to the hull

Wonderful.

Top and lower rails are now fitted on both sides together with the 12 gun ports. The hull is now really taking shape, she's a very broad lady. Next l shall finish off the stern section then give the outer hull and rails a coat of Clou. l have also dug out an old building slip that l've adjusted to fit Alert's hull which is a more comfortable height for me to work on

Going back to the stern section. Working on the rails and counter rails. These have quite a bend and are made of 2 thinner parts laminated together. To ensure they are bonded well, l will leave them clamped overnight.

The stern rails are now complete and the rudder fitted, leaving one or two small jobs to complete this part of the build. l have also given the outside of the hull a coat of Clou (sanding sealer) to bring out the colour and protect the wood before embarking on the deck superstructure (windlass, hatches etc.), which l shall detail in my next couple of posts. For now l have decided to plank the outer hull down to the wales on both sides, but that's a good few weeks away and may have a change of plan by then. Who knows.

Concentrating on the deck superstructure, the windlass, and winch have been constructed and fitted into place. The windlass' drum l found particularly difficult. lt is made up of six separate octagonal segments, tapering very slightly to the outside edges. Each face of the octagon is only 3.5mm at it's maximum width and to form these into a round was a nightmare for me. l did the best l could but l must say, this is one part of the build l'm not so happy with. They are formed round 4mm dowels for the centre 4 sections with the 2 outer sections being formed round 3 mm dowels. The six sections with the ratchet teeth are then joined together around the support beams before installing the complete structure into the hull. ln comparison the winch apparatus behind the mast is a relatively simple and self explanatory procedure but effective nonetheless. Next comes the hatches and gratings. They are all made up and just need fitting into place. l particularly enjoyed making hatch number 3 with the sliding canopy, which l think looks particularly good and it slides too.

This is such a beautiful model and is so presentable and eye catching in its' current state. While I am sure she'll be a treat once completed, I am so glad to be able to see and appreciate how beautiful and fascinating she is to appreciate at this stage. You are doing wonderful work. Very inspiring!
I await further progress pictures with pleasure. Thumbsup Gold Star Gold Star Gold Star Gold Star
