Join the Nautical Research Guild. I'm sure it's easy online and worth the $ for the Journal. They offer a lot for your $.
The updated re-issue of Steel's alone looks worth it. It's for sale for 10 bucks even if you don't join.

I borrowed a copy of "The American-Built Clipper Ship" by William L. Crothers. Lots of detail on deck planking, tapering and joggling, plus every thing else Ameican Clipper!
