During preparation of the complete hull kit of the french 8 pdr frigate, Tom from CAF got the idea to prepare a small kit of one section of the gun deck.
In addition CAF is able to give the new series of figurines a good platform - so the small battle station is fully manned with 10 figurines.
So you can name it also battle station diorama.

But I not want to talk too much - it is better and worth to show the content of this small diorama kit

The total size of the finished model is 14 to 10 cm

The kit comes in a narrow slender box with a nice rendring label on top

IMG_3509.jpg

The box is completely filled with manual, wooden parts, a lot of fittings and the resin figurines

Here the complete overview of the content - I was positively surprised about the huge number of parts, only for one gun

But let us take a closer look to the elements and parts included in this kit

A) The wooden Parts

IMG_3515.jpg

included are also some nice profiles for the base-plate for later presentation

IMG_3517.jpg

IMG_3518.jpg

The quality of the timber is good - also the laser cut were done in very good quality

IMG_3519.jpg

IMG_3520.jpg

These wooden parts will form the deck planking and the walls of the hull forming the battle station

B) The rope material

four different sizes of rope material are included - all in good quality

to be continued .... in the following post I will show the rest of the content

C) The Fittings

all brass parts are separated in small numbered blister bags
IMG_3513a.jpg

And I was positively surprised about the different high quality and details of these parts, but take yourself a look

IMG_3523.jpg

IMG_3524.jpg

square headed bolts

IMG_3525.jpg

IMG_3527.jpg

IMG_3528.jpg

IMG_3529.jpg

double hooks were used at this time instead of ringbolts - a correct important historical detail

IMG_3530.jpg

round headed bolts

IMG_3532.jpg

bolts with disc and cotter for the outside of the gunport

IMG_3533.jpg

IMG_3535.jpg

the 8pdr muzzle in good quality

IMG_3536.jpg

ringbolt and ring cast in one piece - so no gap when you close the ring and no soldering necessary

IMG_3537.jpg

Hook with ring - in 3D and not only photo etched

IMG_3538.jpg

You can see, that CAF was developing here some very interesting fittings, which will rise the quality of the small details of such a gun carriage

this type and quality of photo etched parts we know already from other CAF-kits

IMG_3539.jpg

and also the quality of the blocks are very good

The Figurines and Resin parts

it will be crowded on the diorama, but this was the reality at this time

The figurines are also available separately for other ship models

also a small lamp is included, which can be illuminated by the modeler by installation of LED-parts

IMG_3541.jpg

and finally the Manual in full colour with parts annotation and the content list with numbering - enough information for this relatively easy to build model

Final Comment:

a small and interesting "In Between"-project
good overall quality
interesting and high quality fittings - I guess some of them will get standard in CAF kits in future
highly interesting and complete set of figurines for the gun-crew (also highly interesting for other ship models
quite inexpensive model for what you get

=> with some careful and work in detail you can produce a nice, accurate small diorama model with good quality and historical / technical correct

Many Thanks to CAF for a new and highly interesting (small) kit
For more information please take a look at the web-page from CAF model

and also the LED parts

Oh, wow! What an excellent kit. Having researched the period quite a bit for my novels on la Renommée, I'm surprised that most of the parts are very accurate, right down to the officer's hat and cape and 8 pounder which the French used when launched. (The British rearmed her with 9 pounders after capture in 1747.) The sailors' pants could have been a bit baggier and shorter, but hey, close enough. Great find!

Thanks Uwe for the great review on the "La Renommee" section. I just ordered it along with light kit. It should be fun to build between models. Regards, Magic Mike
