Hallo Sailors,

During a recent visit to a public school for the IWM a large model sailing ship was seen on display. The school's archivist has no information on it and was asking about the ship and its name.

The attached images are of the model and I hope that somebody will be able to provide further info,
with many thanks,

First of all a warm welcome here on board of our forum.
To identify a vessel like this, or maybe the class of ship, it is helping very much to see the stern of the ship and off course also more details of the bow and the installed figurehead.
You should know, the the stern and the bow form and structure changed over the time and was often adjusted and changed in details.
So it would help if you can post some photos with more close views of such areas.....

BTW: just one idea
- the showcase of the model seems to be also original made especially for this model.
and the showcase has two long sides - maybe the model was exhibited in the past on a different place - so maybe on the back side (in moment against the wall) is mounted a badge with the name of the ship - it could be - so maybe it is possible to take a look

There are a number of elements to consider:
The main deck does not appear to continue under the castles, so there would be a "split level" main deck.
The windows under the quarterdeck are conflicting the gun ports, but that is also true of the part in the waist.
The deckhouse (would be a galley) and small wheelhouse are consistent with XXth century tall ships.
The gun ports, not being in line with any deck, would be decorative, and consistent with ships from after 1850.
The split topsails indicate the same time.
... So we are looking at a merchant ship from between 1850 and 1900, of relatively small tonnage, but with large passenger capacity as indicated by the quarter windows, which means a liner on the short sea trade (Maybe mediterranean or African ports)

according to the Encyclopedia of Ships, it looks very similar to the "Java" 1813 a USA ship built similar to the USS Constitution.

Welcome aboard.

Looking to the sails and rigging is this a 19th century full square rigged ship. Clipper.
Above the back there is a gliding plate or some kind. Never seen this before or never noticed this before on a ship. Is this a famous coffin ship from Ireland?
Looks like a ship of that time.
more clippers

Thank you for all of your very helpful replies.

I have arranged another visit to the model with the intention of looking at the hidden side of the case, and to remove the case and to photograph the ship in detail.

Hope fully I can get back with more information in a few weeks time.
