I have recently started on a project for a friend, restoring a boat built well over 100 years ago, and subsequently disassembled and generally forgotten. There are no records that we can findIMG_20220127_124848.jpg of a boat called Fairland of this ilk, so it may be from the builders imagination.

From the general looks, it could be a Clipper, but the odd thing is that with 3 masts, it has 21 spars, again unheard of, and something of a challenge.

The remit is to restore it, with minimal invasion, to a level where the boat can be seen for what it is, and not to 'as new' condition. I am happy with that, as I would not have the knowledge or skills to go farther. The photos show what I was originally presented with, and where I am now. I have removed much of the tangle of bent and broken wire shrouds etc, leaving the ratlines and some shrouds where post.

Had I removed the ratlines, they would have broken up, so best left. The deck has been improved and re oiled, and all 3 masts repaired where broken. The hull generally cleaned and the painting tidied up .

Onwards and upwards, will restore the deck furniture and rails next before thinking about the rigging. More suggestions the better please.IMG_20220127_124848.jpgIMG_20220127_124844.jpgIMG_20220127_124922.jpgseeIMG_20220127_124830.jpgIMG_20220127_124825.jpgIMG_20220127_124850.jpgIMG_20220127_124815.jpg

Getting on, now looking for the correct placement of the deck. I have placed the parts I would think to be correct, and in pic 3 have those left over. On top of that, there are both the remaining rails, a lot of which will need re making.

I now would like please confirmation or otherwise of my thoughts, and any other comments.PXL_20230131_162245204.jpgPXL_20230131_162136280.jpgPXL_20230131_162119564.jpg

I have now had a chance to chat with the owner of the vessel, and we have come to a consensus on the deck arrangements. Still needs a lot of TLC, but looks about right now. Any thoughts before we move on please?
