Crocodile clips.

Crocodile clips are very useful: They provide a good grip and will go into small spaces. However, I find that they tend to slip off my thumb/finger when trying to open them.
I have solved this by opening the bits that wrap around at the 'handle' end and hammered them flat. Much easier to use afterwards.

That modification begs the question “why didn’t I think off that”. I also have had many a tussle with those slippery things versus bumbling fingers.

I've done similar by mounting the clips on dowels then placing them in holes in a block of wood to hold small parts for painting.
