There are such things known as a mill/drill. Having a dedicated mill just for modelling can be expensive....for modelling, a drill press may well fill the bill for such work.

I have a dedicated mill and I use it to drill holes too with the proper bit. But I see your point.

I have a full size drill press (Delta 17") but also have the Proxxon MF70 micro mill. I use both. A man cannot have too many tools!

Note the Dremel 'drill press' in Norway's photo. When you have little money and a big project you have to make do.

I used my Dremel drill press (plastic parts and all) for the gratings.

Also to mill my cannon trucks. Going slowly with a 1/16" down cut bit I think it worked out okay.

Sometimes we have to just make do if we want to move ahead. (That's 40 years on our farm talking... )

It doesn't matter what tools we use to achieve the tasks, as long as they do the job we like, and accept it! I like your gratings., and the idea to make coamings in different wood for contrast.
