Hello mates,
10 years ago I started with the first drawing of this frigate, which belonged to the initial equipment of the young German Navy. As HMS OAKLEY, belonging to the type HUNT II, she was commissioned in May 1942 as Destroyer Escort. On 18 October 1958, she was taken over by the young German Navy and, after some modifications, entered fleet service as the F212 GNEISENAU.

The 1955 newbuilding programme of the young navy required appropriate units for training on the new weapons and their electronic systems; at the same time, the nautical and naval trainees also had to be trained and educated.
In addition to the training frigate F216 SCHEER for the naval location school in Bremerhaven, F213 SCHARNHORST and F212 GNEISENAU also underwent a major refit.

My 1:250 scale cardboard model represents this state of construction; or at least tries to. For the realisation I had a shipyard plan of the HUNT II class; this only served as a reference for the frame plan and the main deck in its shape. Everything else I took from photos and some hand drawings from the Wilhelmshaven naval arsenal, which was used at the time for the installation and construction of the antenna system.
My passion is to research, draw and build models that don't exist and that no-one has ever attempted.
I also want to tell the story of the German Navy in cardboard boxes. Hardly anyone still knows these units, although without them many a man would never have become an admiral.

Here are a few close-ups of details ... as I said, 1:250 cardboard and photo-etched parts, which were made according to my drawings ...

With that I say goodbye and I hope my first post wasn't too bumpy? Thank you for your interest, and if I have chosen the wrong category for my entry, I apologise to the moderators ...
With best regards
Wil

a beautiful cardboard model - hard to recognize, that it is card .......
Would like to see once a building log, means realy a description how you make such a model - very good work

Wow! What a wonderful model. Great scale relationship between all the elements. Have you ever thought of air brushing some weathering? Not a critique at all, just a question out of curiosity.
