Good idea for smaller size models.
For larger ones I have spent some $$$ to have custom sized folded acrylic five-sided boxes made to sit in an over sized wood base with grooves cut on a table saw to receive the edges of the box. I have the footprint sized to match the size of the available display shelf or location. These (such as my pilot schooner and Bluenose) have been too large for my own heating and bending, as well as two for my 17: & 19" strip canoes in their separate beaching dioramas) but less expensive than the ones sold on line with wood edging.
