The Doctor's Waiting Room

Guys take care, The Models will wait. Your health does not. I had a ByPass 6 years ago, were they put staff infection in my blood as the result of a unclean heart lung machine and spent 6 months with tubes hanging out of me & re-cut open to remove infected metal chest rings. Took 4 years to recover my imune system back to normalish. Make you realize how quick life & health can be taken from you. Don't waist it.

Hi gents,

I am only just 45 and already find it annoying that I sometimes have to put off my glasses when working on sub millimeter items. Next time I will think if thats all I cant complain.
Hope you will all do better and find a way to enjoy your hobby most.

Greg hope you still had a nice saturday wedding annivesery.

To all keep up the good work.

Tnx all. Enjoy the hobby every Day. Have to take 30 pills a day because of the 6 healt problems. Its good to ben at this forum because here in can find some solutions to get things done that i otherwise didnt think of.

G'day Pat
I'm so happy that you feel at home with us. Again your are correct, we give our ideas free to everyone, family or guest. After all there's a saying in Australia.

I have arthritis in the hip, degenerative disc in the neck, and frozen solders (can't lift my arms up past my shoulders and some pain). In addition, I have had 7 surgeries on my hands for trigger finger plus carpal tunnel in my working hand. You can add Type I diabetes on that (does not impact modeling unless my sugar goes low).

There is a lot of the micro-control problems using my fingers that make modeling difficult, as well as general holding and manipulating issues. I have a Dremel tool as an assist for some task (and modeling paste for when it does a bit too much). I also work in short periods, and sometimes I have to take a week off because of shoulder pain. But, there are still the sanding task, gluing, pinning, and so on that are hands on only. My dad was an auto-body man (he started in the early 50s), so I learned about how to adapt to work situations from him--he was truly a master craftsman that could use a sledgehammer and a micro-hammer, both with precision. There are many forms and plans for tools to help with model ship building, and I am thankful for that.

My main issue is how I see the model. Something being off say 0.5 mm should not be that big of a deal, but it does bother me so I tend to redo work (and then end up being 1.0 mm off;)). But, the models are my hobby at this point in my life and the wife is kind in supporting. I build slow, and for myself.

Lastly, on another form on another website, I saw a rather arrogant comment that one person said he never used a power tool on the model (only off). I thought, well good for you, some of us don't have that luxury. Perhaps at sometime, during some conference, there should be presentations about working with disabilities (yea, I know some people don't like the word but it is what it is).

Power tools do save a lot of time and energy even if you are OK. My best power tools are a little hand-held 12 Volt drill, a hobby bandsaw, a drill press, a chop saw for cutting mitres and a small Unimat SL lathe that I have had since 1973 (and it was 2nd hand then).

Thats also a lot man. I have crohn. Heartritm problems. Rheumatism. Adrenals dont make hormones no more.weak bones. About 12 broken ribs a year.thyroid doesnt work any more. hyperventilation .addison disease. But with all this it is important for me to build these ships. It makes me relaxed but my docter doesnt understand this. Het say working with these little parts of wood that you have to make is stressfull. My wife bought me a lot of power tools from proxxon. A table saw. Bandsaw. Figursaw woodmill. Sanding pen.beltsander. dremel. Lot of tools but cant Do without them.if anyone knows another practical tool please tell us. Its not a game who has the most disabilyties here but a conversation that can help use further to make it easyer building ships.

I am probably going to make a “Category” named “The Modelers Life” so many other things that can be discussed that concern our lives and day to day woes.

I have posted a possible solution for you on A HELPING HAND thread that might help you.cluck here.

This is a very common disease among modelers.....it's called Perfectionalism. My admiral called it stupidism. What ever you called it, there us no cure for it.

G'day all
Just want you all to know that I back again. Been off my normal heath for a while due to constant bleeding when I use the toilet. Consequently my iron level is 5 compare a normal level for males of 13.5 to 17.5.
My ferritin level is 8 compare to a normal for males of 20 to 500. This is the reason why my
get and go
has
got up and went!
I'm too tired to even to scratch my b#m, as the Ozzie expression goes. I'm going to have an iron infusion on the 1st September, so I should have more energy then.

Glad to know all is getting better - I understand health related things too. I have been having back problems, which stemmed from an injury at my work many years ago. I was carrying something rather bulky and it seemed to have bulged a disk. Well, this flares up from time to time as it affects the Sciatic Nerve.
The admiral , (as well as my doctor) has been wanting me to see a Chiropractor. I have NEVER been to one. I don't necessarily like the idea of someone grabbing my head and twisting it around like a hoot owl !!!
While I was working on those chain plates last night, then I strained a muscle on my right hip / side.

I know where you are coming from Donnie. Many, many years ago, when I was 19, I was kicking a soccer ball around and that night my neck was in severe pain.
I went through the normal doctors, xray etc etc and there was nothing wrong with my neck.
I was told to go to a bone re-arranger, the common name is a Chiropractor. He looked at my neck and xray and said they were fine.
Then the Chiropractor looked at my foot. 'Aha here's the problem ' he said. Then he gave my big toe a huge pull and whammy my neck pain was gone, except for a bruising feeling.
He told me that the foot is our body in miniature and the big toe is my head and neck.
Apparently when I was kicking the soccer ball ,with no shoes, I kinked my big toe and my brain thought it was my neck that was sore, not my toe.
I walked out with a completely different view of a Chiropractor, than when I walked in.
