Hi everyone, I've been a card modeler for years and almost always stuck to Great War aircraft. I saw a few Shipyard builds in the past that were oh so inspiring that I had to give it a go. Of course I had to choose the Bellona as my first ship and promptly figured out that I had bitten off something that was way too large. This project started just over 4 years ago and has been put on hold until now for almost the whole time due to illness in the family. Things are on a even keel once again so I figured I'd dust her off and finish her.
I didn't like the 'planking' that comes with the kit as my first effort had that starved look between bulkheads by only using 2 layers of roughly 100lb stock and my painting would never look like wood. I abandoned the final included planking and replaced it with a rough planking of 1mm board strips , sanded, filled and sealed and then left the card behind except for positioning and scaling. The wood 'planking' is actually very thin strips of cherry wood and the decks are made from 1mm board covered with strips of 'MacTac' dirtied up with a bit of stain. The first couple images are rather poor as my camera at that time was terrible but I bribed my wife to lend me hers for the rest.

Impressive built - your planking is lookung realy good! Did you ever try to build a pure wooden model?
Thanks Uwek :) I never could afford a nice wooden ship model so this was the closest I could get. When my wife gets better to the point where I can get back to work, it will be one of the first things I treat myself with! I'm just finishing off my 2nd reading of the Patrick Obrien Aubrey/Maturin series (where I first heard of Bellona) and a nice French built frigate will be in my sights! Any suggestions?
hello ron0909
fantastic what one can make with this material, has seen a Victory in a forum of a checoslovak woman (Doris is her name) just amazing (photo of this Victory

dj you are so right on both matters! The flexibility of card as a medium for modeling is astounding. Doris was actually my inspiration to attack the Bellona. She has a whole fleet of wonders and a ton of build logs. I don't know the rules for posting other sites in the open here but if anyone would like a link or 2 to Doris' stuff just pm me. Her encouragement and advice while I was building my hull was priceless as were her build photos!

Hi Ron,

Great to see a papermodeller again. It is amazing to see what you can do with just simple paper.
I know the work of Doris, she is a celebrity in her art of ship modelling. Looking forward to your progress.

A nice wooden ship model would be the Bellona from Chinese manufactorer CAF.

G'day Ron
This build is close to my heritage, being an Australian. The Bellona was used to convey convict and free settlers from England to Australia at the start of our history.
Your build is a perfect example of what you can do with paper and card. I'm so impressed.
Hope your admiral will have her health return to her very shortly.
Happymodeling
Greg
