I thought this might be of interest to some of you. A few years ago I put together a laser cut kit I called The Lauck Street Shipyard in honor of my business that I started in 2003. The diorama was a shipyard with 3 buildings and a ship under construction. One building was the Shipyard Office, another was a Sail Making Shop and the third was a Boat Repair Ship. Here are some photos of the finished diorama.

Unfortunately I sold my laser cutter last year as the demand for the kit and a few other kits I produced was such that it just wasn't worth keeping the wood and supplies on hand and tying up investment dollars.

Hope you enjoy the photos,

Bob

Thanks John, Mike and Dave. It's a shame it didn't sell well. I might have done another similar kit. One of the items I wanted to incorporate was an old sawmill that sat over a river bed. It worked like a giant jig saw using a water turbine. I actually started building the base in 1/2" scale and drew the water turbine and a bunch of other parts in 3D for 3D printing. It was going to be built entirely out of stripwood so there was no laser cutting required. Maybe someday I'll finish it. Here's what the mill actually looks like at Sturbridge Village:

If you look closely beneath the mill in the bottom photo, you can see a flume that comes off of a dammed area upstream of the river. The damed area has an overflow that continuously feeds the river but the flume is what feeds the water turbine which turns makes the saw go up and down. I even obtained actual drawings of the mill that I was working from.

Most of my CAD work is done. There's a stone wall that you can see in the upper left photo which I was going to make from styrene stone sheets used in O scale model railroads. I have the sheets but need to paint them.

I'm wondering if anyone here would be interested in building this as a diorama, perhaps even a community type build. If so, I could make the 3D printed parts available for everyone as well as the CAD drawings and parts list.

Great looking diorama, Bob. Hard to say why things do or do net sell but that looks like a winner to me!

I attribute it to the economy at the time because in actuality, practically nothing was selling. That's why I got out of the kit business completely and sold my laser cutter.

By the way, it's good to hear from you again, it's been a while. Nice to see that you're a member here. Hope you're doing well. Are you still working on the Speedwell?

Bob,

HOW did I miss that you had this as well??

Mark Adams
Hi Mark,

It wasn't a big seller. I had hoped it would create a new line of kits for me but I sold so few of them that I just gave up on that idea. Sorry you missed it. I know you got most all of my other kits though.

Take care,

Bob
