The photos I see of them are rather nice, far nicer then 80% of wooden kits costing under 100$. But I have a serious question on them.

How do they deal with model ship droop like plastic kits? Back in the 1990s, I went through a series of how to build model ship kits, and the most often thing commented on plastic was that after a while the material will start to droop, yards, masts, etc.
What has me curious is how well do these paper ships hold up? The standard options is paper masts and yards, but they sell wood upgrade kits for masting and just how well can a piece of paper hold up when plastic with a better strength ratio cant?

Just like with any other medium, there are going to be problems to address. Most people understand the issues and are willing to deal with them.

I just built the Shipyard 1/72 Alert with laser-cut parts. It’s just like a wood kit...cardboard bulkheads, 2 layers of pre-spilled planks, wood spars, cloth sails , brass cannon. I added a wooden boat from a separate kit, and planked the deck with wood. I also used wood deadeyes and blocks that I had rather than the paper ones that came with the kit. It came out quite well. I’ll try to attach pictures. Probably not a kit for less experienced builders. Instructions and rigging plans not very complete.

I want to agree here with zoltan and John. Great model - congratulation.
Would like to See once a Building log of such a Model. I am sure it is very interesting to See the different methods.

Its US $353 from ZHL plus shipping and US $265 from the link I posted plus shipping, depends on what the shipping charges are.

best regards John.

I found when I was making paper models in the past is that paper can look very authentic in particular with replicating metal. Plate work on model iron ship hulls looks far better and realistic in paper than made of plastic, wood or metal. Same goes for treads on armoured vehicles and small unstressed non moving parts such as hinges and small metal fittings. Paper parts can also be stiffenened and made very hard with a coat of PVA glue.

Does the price difference reflect on different kit upgrade levels? I have recently tried to buy some fittings from the Aliexpress site but my order was cancelled as the credit card transaction could not be processed.

If I order La Belle I would be wary of going through aliexpress. If there should be any problem trying to get satisfaction from them is very iffy. With eBay you are secure. Also ZHL appears to be a reputable seller.
Does CAF have a website? I couldn’t find one.
