I am writing this and expecting to get ridiculed but here goes

I have only completed one small wooden model just as a sort of practise for a larger more detailed build, which I have now started "The Golden Star"

The problem I have is how the hell to do the rigging, this part is filling me with dread, because I canot tie a knot to save my life, and on my previous small model mainly used super glue !!! , proberly not the best quality for a person in this hobby, I am nowhere near this stage but it is always in the back of mind how will I manage to tie all those small pulleys and blocks :text-imsorry:

There are some books that show how to do rigging and there are books that show how to make each knot. See this section on reference books. Get one that shows each stage of the knot tying process and get some larger rigging line (.75 mm or so) and practice.

Hi. Further to Gary's comment. There are some great tutorial vids on Youtube which will help you. I suggest you use some thick cord (as thick as your little finger if you like!) and practice - this is how I taught my sons fishing knots and pretty soon they could do it with their eyes closed. Also, you will find the one that work best for you depending on what you are doing because you won't need that many - right tool for the job, as they say. A tip from fishing is to lubricate the knot as you tighten it down i.e. put a bit of spit on it! I put a tiny dab of thin CA on the finished knot with the end of a pin (some guys use varnish, lacquer or Titebond) and then cut off the loose end with a razor blade - do that before the CA dries fully or it ruins the blade edge very quickly and the Supermarket will begin to wonder why you are buying so many blades. I'm new to this too (see my build log) but you do end up finding what works best for you and you do get better at it. Regards.

Hi Graham
Thanks for the advice, whats daunting is the instructions although quite good, but there is no procedure so to speak or order on which to start first, as I said in my post I am a long way from this stage yet, but it is the one thing that is worrying me

Also what I noticed is instructions dont really explain how you fix the horizontal masts to the vertical mast, sorry I dont know the correct names yet

There are lots of vids you can watch on youtube as Graham has said for all sorts of different stages and model ships you may even find one on there of your kit, just search for model ships or scale model ships even donnie has a few which were very helpful to me and you can find them here
http://www.shipsofscale.com/sosforums/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=664
but when you run into problems just ask and there is always someone who will help you as best they can, that's the great thing about this forum nobody will ridicule you or criticize you for asking the most basic of questions we are here to help and support each other.
cheers
steve
