Rigging off ships is covered in many books and the sizes of the lines used in English books is usually expressed in circumference. However, most of us purchase or get kit rigging line expressed in millimetes. In the chart below, I have converted the full size rope circumference to diameters expressed in millimeters. Since there are many different scales of ships, to get the size line for you model, the diameter given only needs to be divided by your scale. i.e. scale 1:77 means divide the diameter by 77.

Cir. Dia in mm
1" 8.0851
1 1/2" 12.1276
2 " 16.1701
2 1/2" 20.2168
3" 24.2552
3 1/2" 28.2977
4" 32.3403
4 1/2" 36.3828
5" 40.4254
5 1/2 44.4679
6" 48.5104
7" 56.5955
8" 64.6806
9" 72.7656
10" 80.8507
11" 88.9358
12" 97.0209
13" 105.1059
14" 113.191
16" 129.3611
18" 145.5313

Nylon and polyester line is highly sensitive to temperature or humdity changes and will expand and contract. Cotton line rots over time. Linen does not have these problems is available from many kit producers. "Ages of Sail" carries Amati rigging which is very tightly wound. "Model Expo, INC" carries other manufactures rigging line which are of similiar quality. I tend to use Amati (first choice), Mamoli and Mantua lines.

Thanks for all that info . It helps when your trying to place an order and they don't have that info . Is there a formula for figuring this all out ?

The formula is circumference time 25.4 divided by 3.1415926 to convert inches to millimeters. This gives you the actual diameter in millimeters. Thus you have to divide this result by the scale you are working in.

That is very timely info. I will attemp to print this out later.
