Hi everyone. I've just completed building the Friesland, and am looking for a kit for my next build. I've narrowed my search to either the Amati Revenge or Mamoli's Sao Miguel. Has anyone out there built one (or both) of these? I'm looking for information as to the quality of the parts, completeness of plans, etc. Any information anyone can supply will be greatly appreciated.

Hallo Steve, would be great, if you could show us your Friesland.....I guess it is the mamoli kit?

I wonder if you found background information on the Carraca Atlantica or Sao Miguel. This is indeed the only representation of a carrack with SIDE galleries I know of. So I wonder where the information came from. Maybe from a naval museum in Portugal?

By the way, I lately got rid of a very old Heller plastic kit of the same model. In fact, it was almost completely based on their Santa Maria kit, and has disappeared from their catalog probably some 40 years ago. As the choosen colours were the same as the Mamoli kit, I suspect Heller took their inspiration from Mamoli.

One last point. I once bought and and built a Mamoli kit of their Dutch Yacht. The model had remained for years on the shelves of that shop, and, apart from the usual problems with these kits, I had to replace ALL the wood for the second planking. It was completely useless, as it broke even without bending it. So if your model is an old one, you had better check the quality of its wood

Good luck with your build, and don't hesitate to show your progress!

Hi JP,
Mamoli says that their plans are based on documents found in the naval museum in Barcelona. I bought this kit as opposed to the Revenge because I understand that Mamoli is no longer in business and once their existing kits are gone they will no longer be available. Also, I really like the look of the model. I've started the build and the quality of the wood appears OK. The only issue I've had so far is that the metal gunport frames that come with the kit stick out too much, so I tossed them and will make wooden ones.

Steve,
I built the Caracca quite a few years ago. There are a few problems with the kit. The biggest one is that belaying pins did not exist that time so it is not correct to use them. I built the ship first with them and changed it later. Some of the deck furnitures are out of scale too.
Otherwise the hull could be built easily, no problem with the shape.
I used the metal gunports of the kit as they can be very easily filed to the hull shape. I cut the gunport openings, put the metal frames dry into them, marked to the hull shape and filed them outside of the kit. Obviously before planking so the metal will be hidden at the end.Timber frames are not a bad idea though.
