G'day Don
That is a problem that we have or had.
What I do now, is to think of a particular ship, in my case it was the HMB ENDEAVOUR that I went on. The ship was docked and I embarked her from a docking port which was on her port side.
Every time I want to know which is port or or starboard I think of that memory.

I hope that will help you in the future mate.

Standing on the back end looking foward, port is on the left, starboard is on the right. Port wine is red - the port light is red - the starboard one is green!:) - Bob

Looking forward, or at the bow or stem--port is on your left--think left and port has same number of letters. Starboard, well not the same number as right, so just get port. Blue tape with P and S on the hull helps on some days:)

For stern, think steering as that is generally the rudder is located.
