Mantua Sergal's Le Soleil Royal

Thanks a lot John. Your skills improve with each ship and with each book you study. A great library leads to a great result. Now, with the help of these ship sites, the time for the learning curve decreases and the ideas shared help eliminate the mistakes it takes to get there. You will be amazed at how much each ship improves. Thus, a master piece might be your next ship or only one ship past that. There is no perfect model and mine has several errors.

Hello Gary,Only you know were a few mistakes are, 99% would not,the few errors only lead the way for you to become a master builder, you also gave a lot of learning to all us other modelers, personally I think you did an outstanding job ,kudo's for the way you presented your log, hope you feel good as you should

Gary, I really like this model, it has always been on my future wish list, your build just makes me want it more! You did an excellent job with it, now if I can only finish my current SIX builds on the bench, then get the money together and purchase the bloody thing for myself.

Thanks a lot John. She is a real beauty and I recommend when you do attempt to build her, you get the pictures from the Louve in Paris of the model to be able to help make it a good and accurate model.

I had friends from the ship model club I belong to come over and see my model. I got out the picture of the ship that comes with the kit and used that to compare the rigging with the rope they supply with the kit and mine where I used the appropriate size lines. I had forgotten how incredible the difference was. Mantua's is so heavily lined and clunky. It is unrealistic looking. It cost a little more to do things using the right size blocks and line but the end result is so marvelous that is it well worth the effort and expense, especially when you consider how much time you have invest in build the model. Also, after you have built a few, you build up a stock so the cost becomes less with each ship. The end result is that the model goes from being a nicely looking vessel to a realistic looking work of art and really shows off the craftsmanship. It looks like it would really sail and could be handled well even in a storm.

Hello Gary,
A ship with his rigging is very beautiful and your "Soleil Royal" is nice to see.
Home it's also a reference.

Good Year 2017,

Daniel.

Again Gary, Such a fine beautiful ship. Thank you for restoring this Build Log.

Donnie

Thanks Donnie for working with me to get this re-posted. By rebuilding the site, I realized how much work I put into it and was able to enjoy it again.
Thanks Bill. it is the best one I have built to date and I enjoy looking at it in the case.
The months of research and extra expense of after market items to increase its accuracy seem worth it in the end. When you consider how long it takes to build, the cost of this over time is actually cheap entertainment.
With all the head scratching I did trying to get everything right, I am surprised that I still have hair. Of course, the color is a lot grayer now.

Hello from norway, is there some photos from the bild of the hull, planking of stern and boug/front,
my next projekt i think vill be this boat.
ps: nise photos Thumbsup

I have finished the model. It took 1,615 hours and has 6,503 parts. She was well worth the effort and makes a beautiful vessel.
Hi Gary,
Great to see another old friend on this site. I just recently joined. Your ship is outstanding. Good job.

Well I got the case and it was made in Manila. It holds the ship very well and really sets it off. It came encased in a wooden grate and was very well packed. The assembly was basically attached one pole at a time with screws at the bottom. Once two sides were done, insert the plexiglass for testing. Once all the sides were done, insert one piece at a time and adjust, then screw on the top and seat the plastic. Do this for all sides and take your time to make sure it seats properly. The top piece then just sets in the frame. I bought a brass plate that says the name of the ship, time and pieces used, completion date and builder and put it in the case. The pictures show the end results.
Gary,
Where did you get the case? It looks great and I am going to need one soon. I am almost finished with the Royal William.

stavanger: The build is the usual plank on frame model so there are no pictures of this stage. There are many books that discuss how to do this. There are some people on this site that are showing what works for them. I have built so many over the years and they are all the same. Thus, I don't even think about it anymore. Find what works for you best.

Hi Vpirozzi: Thanks for the compliment and I got the case through Model Expo. I think your ship is too large for any of their cases and you may need to find another source.
Hi Gary,
I have bought 2 of their cases in the past. One houses the Victory and the other the Sovereign of the Seas. Their largest case just fit the SOS. The Royal William is considerably wider.

I do have a good friend who is a master finish carpenter. I am pretty sure he would build a custom case for me. It pays to have good friends who are talented. I also have a good friend who is a seamstress. She created the sails for my RW. Pass it around if any body needs customs sails made. She likes to do this stuff and is more than reasonable.
Thanks,
Vince Ship-1
