Where should the anchor chain box be located on a 1920s fishing schooner. The plans to Elsie do not show what to do with the chain once it comes onto the deck. Any help is appreciated.

Hi Maggie, is this a large fishing boat or just a small local one, a view of the area concerned on the plan would help a lot,

best regards John.

John, Unable to post a picture, but I have seen the chain box in two places on other models of Elsie. One model shows the box on the port side near the main mast with the port chain in the box and the starboard chain lying on the deck. Another model shows the box just aft of the anchor winch and forward of the main mast. This model shows chain from both anchors around the winch and fed into the box. As I have been unable to find a picture of the true Elsie or other schooners of her time that shows the chain box, I am led to assume that the the other model makers just used their own judgement. I would really like to have my model as accurate as possible and still hope to fine the proper answer. Thanks for your interest.

G'day Maggie, I couldn't find much either, what I did find and I do not know if these are the instructions you are using, but what I infer from them is that a chain was used on one side and a rope on the other, see pics below,

This seems to imply that there was only one chain box on the port side.

and on this pic it states, Chain Whelp ( iron ) on the port side, and on the starboard side, Whelp ( wood ), which would be for Rope, hope this helps you .

I have attached a couple of pics of a small fishing boat that I built, and it uses rope for the Anchor Grappling hook, and the rope was just coiled on the deck,

This of course I realize is a much smaller boat.

John,
First, what a great little model boat picture that you sent. I like the way it is presented on a simple cradle. I plan to show mine that way also. As far as the chain box, I believe that I will construct it on the port side with the port anchor chain around the winch then in the box. I will have the starboard chain loose on the deck. Thanks for your time as it was a great help.

Happy sailing,
Maggie
