I'm a newbie. I just found the SOS site - seems like its going to help me when I get stuck. My sons got me the Sultana kit last xmas. For a whole bunch of reasons including moving to NC from WV, I am just now going to begin to tackle construction. I'm going to read as much as I can before starting. Any thoughts on books to supplement everything I have in the kit?

Welcome aboard. Hope you enjoy this friendly, helpful site.
There is a books and reference section where Donnie and I have listed the best books that we have in our collection. Write down a few and look then up where they describe what the book contained. The planking techniques, Historic Ship Models and Modeling from Stem to Stern are great starting books and are a constant source I even use often today.
I have been modeling for many years and find it the most rewarding and challenging hobby.

Hi Eerman,

Welcome aboard and congratulations on starting on your Sultana build! I always thought she was a very pretty ship and a nice subject to model. The reference books Gary lists are great and I use them as well. Do you have the Sultana practicum? If not, it's a free download from the Model Expo site: http://www.modelexpo-online.com/product.asp?ITEMNO=MS2016

Just go to that page, click on the Documents tab and you have a list of all the downloads for the kit. I think the practicum is in 8 parts. You don't have to follow all of it, as it does go into techniques that you may not want to get into.

One of the things I really love about solid hull kits is that you can really put as much or as little into them as time permits. If you want something really great and nicely shaped, the hull requires some sanding, maybe a little carving. You can even plank the hull over if you want, as it makes a very smooth, solid surface to support your planking.

It any case, it's a good model with a lot of good ship modeling challenges that should keep you busy for a bit. Hope you start a build log!

Hi eerman,

Yep, its great to have you on board here. I hope that you make yourself at home here. I also built the Sultana. It is really a nice ship to build.

If you wish, you can see the build log that I completed clicking here:

I just re-started my attempt on the Sultana. I have sanded the hull and carved the bulwarks. I probably should have taken them down to deck level. Some portions are thicker than others. I want to make a cradle but unsure how shape it. Also, I am confused about transom. Is it shaped for piece of wood in kit? I have attached a pix.

Welcome fellow north Caroliner! I am also fairly new here but I can tell you that you are on the right forum. All these guys are great. If one could only bottle the knowledge here he would make a fortune. As for books these pros will know better than I but one I really liked was planning techniques for model ships. But I am sure there are many many others. I have about 8 and learned a bit form each. Good luck! And welcome!
