HMY Fubbs (1724)

The Keelson:
The next set of photos shows the keelson being installed. I used some rubber bands, small blocks of wood and clamps to hold it firmly against the frames while the glue dried. After the glue dried I added 1/16” dowels at each frame.

Hi Mike,

Great progress. Ps what is the reason for you not to build in a jig? Can you ensure precise allignment of the ribs without the jig? I like your methode as you constantly have easy acces to your build.

Thanks Maarten,
I am using a gantry type building jig, there is some photos of it in the first part of this build log, I like using it for the free access to the build and it can be re-used for many different builds. I use a center line string, level and the scales on the jig for alignment of the frames, see this thread for a description of the jig.

Hi Mike,

Thx and I fully agree with you about the acces to the build. I will look into it for my next pof build.

The Bilge Stringers, Platform supports and Mast Steps
The following phots show the installation of the lower platform supports and lower deck ledges as shown on Portia’s drawings.

Hallo Mike,
This is very fast progress....wow.....are you sleeping in between?
Thanks for sharing the details

Hi Uwe,
Thanks, I wish I could build in real time as fast as these pictures are being posted but they are catch up photo of the build started a while back.
Zoltan ask me to start a log here on one of my other projects and I thought there might be some interest in the Fubbs here.
I will be posting some photos of the stove soon.
Mike

Ship Sink & Stove:
The sink and stove are a nice break from all the framing. This set of photos shows the sink being assembled the cabinet is basswood, the doors, drawers and back is beach wood and the top is walnut. The cabinet hardware is made from brass wire.
The stove was next. I used bloodwood for the bricks and basswood for the hood and vent. It sets between two different deck levels that is why it is not level in the photos, they also show the lower hatches and grating on the lower deck.IMG_4616.JPGIMG_4617.JPGIMG_4618.JPGIMG_4619.JPG

Thanks Dave,
That is a great model of a Brodie stove, they were used in a later time period than the Fubbs. The stove on the Fubbs was more like a brick oven I think, there doesn’t seem to be too much information on ships’ stoves in 1724.

Thanks Uwe,
I will keep a copy of the image for future reference. Is the top made from stone or metal?

Hi Mike,
hope you don't mind me jumping on your thread, but the Fubbs was my very first scratch build model which I built about 16 years ago. Its a rather amateurish attempt compared to your effort and I used Reverend Romero's practicum for the build.
Heres some photos and I elected to rig the model.

I will check this detail in the evening and give you an info....also I will look on other plansets about the stove - Maybe an idea to make an extra thread collecting info about stoves over the centuries and countries ?

Most of the AOTS books has some stove description in them,I agree with Uwe ,good idea to start a stove topic.

Hi Brian,
You built an excellent model of the Fubbs, not amateurish at all your workmanship is always very nice. I have Romero’s practicum but found most of it above my skill level, Gene Bodnar also has a practicum that for me was easier to use gets me a little father along with the model. Your comments are always welcome.
Mike

The Forum Construction Details of Ships would be a good place to locate the stoves thread.
