Just seen a programme made by the BBC (UK TV channel) called Carved With Love: The Genius of British Woodwork: The Glorious Grinling Gibbons. Gibbons (4 April 1648 – 3 August 1721) was a master wood carver who achieved royal sponsorship (Charles II) and arguably produced some of the most amazing carvings ever created. The programme showscases his work, some modern day carvers copying his techniques and since he was at the forefront of carving I feel sure he will have been a major influence in a period where decorative ship carving was at its height. Worth a look if you are interested and you will find the programme here -
