Don Farr's Blandford Cross Section Build

Hi Don.
If you look through some of your left over planking strips from previous builds you may be able to locate some planking strips that are 1/32” thick to use as shims in the keel, it doesn’t matter what kind of wood it is because it will not be seen on the finished model. One shim on each side of the frame slot will take care of the problem

Here are some progress pictures, not to happy with some aspects, mainly the lower deck clamp it falls in the jig line,,,I have checked the location on the plans numerous times and they are right on, the mesurments on the jig are corect also,,,,I can fix the clamp when I remove the jig as long as they fall in a straight line, also frame No.3 and NO.2 the spacing does not look right,,,but again I can et the corect spacing WHEN I INSTALL THE DECK CLAMPS, want to install some more frames to see how they line up, as always critisims and coments are WELCOME, as you notice I installed the jig top with dowels so I can readly take it off to check items that is working out OK20180510_080311[3056].jpg20180510_080426[3055].jpg20180510_081308[3054].jpg20180510_081523[3053].jpg20180510_081635[3052].jpg20180510_080311[3056].jpg20180510_080426[3055].jpg20180510_081308[3054].jpg20180510_081523[3053].jpg20180510_081635[3052].jpg20180510_080311[3056].jpg20180510_080426[3055].jpg20180510_081308[3054].jpg20180510_081523[3053].jpg20180510_081635[3052].jpg20180510_080311[3056].jpg20180510_080426[3055].jpg20180510_081308[3054].jpg20180510_080311[3056].jpg20180510_080426[3055].jpg20180510_080311[3056].jpg20180510_080426[3055].jpg20180510_081308[3054].jpg20180510_081523[3053].jpg20180510_081635[3052].jpg

Looks good, you are making progress.
Mike

progress pictures, first four frames dry fitted, seems like it is OK, if anyone sees something wrong please let me know,,,,have a little sanding to do on the top building jig notches horizontally so deck clamp fits, and there maybe a problem with frames No.1 and 4 as when i seat them in the keel one or the other pops up will have to use CA on them, witch i dislike to use

Hi Don,
The notches in the top are too tight, that is causing your problem they should all be a loose fit not too loose but easy to remove. You are making good progress.

Hi Mike41, Hope I am listing this in the right place, I am having a big problem with my frames especially FRAME No 5 and No.6, will have tore-do frame No. 5 completly, frame No. 6 I have a couple of problems hope I do not need to re-make that one too, will show what is hapening with pictures in my Blanford one side of the lower deck beam is way out, it lines up perfectly on the plans but when i put it in the jig for dry fitting one side sits right on byt the other is way, way off do not know what happened other problems also will show them latter today, time to make corections at this point, any help will be greatly appreciated. THANKS Don

Hi Don,
The deck clamps are not square and level with the keel, remove the one that is way off, measure from the base of the jig to the bottom of the clamp that is right on and mark that point on the opposite side of the frame. Check with your level the base and the two points for the clamp, repeat this process for frames 1 & 9. When the deck clamps are corrected the deck beams will line up in place.

Hi Mike, Sorry I did not get back to you sooner as you well know hit some KANSAS weather the other night, power out for 11 hours and a flood in my liveingroom but all finally taken care of,,,Mike I found my answer like the old saying goes check the plans, as many times as needed finally found my mistake when I pinned the frame to the plans the bottom dropped and tilted, did not recheck it at the time of marking. put it in correct location and it was OK, valuable lesson learned, but your information is invaluable for further checking. THANKS LOADS Don

Hi Don,
No problem, I have enjoyed Kansas weather for over fifty years if it is not too cold or too hot you are someplace else. It is always a good idea to check your work against the plans. I am looking forward to seeing more photos of your build
Mike

Hi Don,
ONE I am on Frame No. 8, on the revised drawing you show PART 8-13 as revised that seems to work, but you also show Frame No. 8-7 it is completly different then Frame No. 8-1,
As Eric said part 7 is a mirror image of part 1
NOW TO Questions on BOM AND PLANS FOR PART 3 and 4 THE BOM says the DECK CLAMPS ARE 13/16 X 5/32 the dimesions on the plans work out to be LOWER DECK CLAMP 7/16 X 5/32 and the UPPER DECK CLAMP 11/32 X 5/32 am i corect in this,,,,
Yes
LOWER DECK FRAMEING the BOM says 18 pcs lower deck planking( 1/4 X 3/32 and 7pcs 3/8 X3/32) question is where is the planking being refered to is it exterior or what (as an aside I have not heard the term FOOITWALLING before what is its function),,,
The lower deck planking is the flooring above the deck beams in the interior of the hull.
Definition of foot waling
: the inside bottom planks of a ship
The function of foot waling is to raise the flooring, so you do not have to step over the bottom of the frames.
I also took the height of the cut off for the frames from the CROSS SECTION FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE KEEL TO THE TOF FRAME TRIM LINE is this OK,
Yes, make sure the hull is level.
one other thing the CROSS SECTION SHOWS LODGING KNEES KNESS I ASSUME THIS IS PART OF THE BEAM AM I CORRECT.
Close but no, if you look at the Part 4 Lower Deck Framing Plan the Lodging Knees are the blue parts labeled LDK-1 thru 6 the are not shown on the section, the knees you see on the section are the hanging knees also shown on the lower deck framing plan. All the knees are located between the frames.
should I post this on my Blanford Build MAYBE JUST YOUR ANSWERS.
It would be better if questions specific to your build were posted in your log, the Main Support Page is more for general questions affecting all the member build logs

Thank you Eric and Mike good answers now I understand these items I always ask the question when I am not sure of something have been burned enough with my assumptions tha are often wrong so THANKS AGAIN Don PS will be posting som progress pictures soon

Hi Mike me again for some reason having a problem with materials, hope you do not mind my asking the QUESTIONS,,,,,the lower deck carlings I measue 2 sizes 3/16 in and 1/4 in what is the depth so I can order materials,,,I still can not figure where the planking goes on the BOM looking at plans can not determine where, the other item is lower deck spirketting goes loked at your and other builds but can not find out where it goes SORRY FOR SO MANY Questions. THANKS AGAIN Don

Hi Don,
The depth of the carlings is ¼”. The planking goes on top of the deck beams and the Spirketting is the planking on the interior of the hull (the walls), I hope this helps.
Mike

Thanks Mike, when you say top of the deck beams do you mean THE DECK PLANKING, you show on the BOM deck planking also, sorry to be a pest. THANKS LOADS Don

Hi Don,
Yes, the deck planking is the planking attached to the top of the deck beams, the planking is two different widths 1/4” and 5/16” use the plan for the locations.
