Constructo 1799 Enterprise help

Hi Uwe,

The instruction book is thick. Lots of pictures but very short instructions. What appears to be a lot of paragraphs per page is really a few sentences of instructions in different languages.

Masts and bowsprit build:

First attempt at adding loops to a block. A spot of AC to hold the wire in place.

A T-pin to form the loop.

Not quite satisfied with result. I’ll have to think some more on the wire wrapping method.

Rudder and Hinges:

A little side project “ fit the hinges to the rudder”. The hinge pins are 6mm long and the entire assembly must fit in the slots cut into the rudder.

I drilled a hole 3mm deep in a piece of scrap. Inserted the hinge pin, placed the hinge in place and added a drop of thick AC. I think once the hinge assembly is fastened to rudder there won’t be a problem fastening the remaining hinge to the hull.

Rudder and Hinges part 2:

The build instructions indicate that the hinges should be fixed with the small nails supplied in the kit. The nails are 12mm long, the rudder is 4mm thick. The hinge holes are equally spaced on both sides of the rudder. My thoughts are to glue the hinges, drill pilot holes through the hinge holes, trim the nails to less than 4mm and glue them in place. Right/wrong??

How have others done this?

This seems to be a good solution. If you glue the hinges, the nails have not to hold the hinge, so you could even shorten them more. You will have on both sides of the rudder the nails in controvers direction, so by accident they meet inside the wood.....so two times 4mm are already 8mm.....
On the hull side you can keep the nails longer when you install the rudder against the stern post

Hi Uwe,

Thank you for your reply. I decided to glue the hinges, cut the nails just short of the head (maybe 1 1/2 mm), drill a pilot hole using the hinge holes as a guide and glue the nails. I did a test of the instructions for nailing the hinges to the rudder. I used a piece of scrap 6 X 4mm, wrapped a hinge around it, drilled pilot holes using the hinge as a guide and set the nails. About 7mm or so of nail stuck out one side. I suppose one could trim them and maybe “peen” them to form a “head”. I think that glueing the hinge and trimming the nails would look better.

Enterprise rigging:

I’ve been looking at the rigging plans supplied with the Enterprise build kit. I have a hard time correlating the two dimensional plan with the final three dimensional result.

I found a lot of examples on the internet, of interest where these. I noticed that in the prints there are gun port doors. The build kit does not include those.

You are making good progress and I am picking up some tips from your build. When working on masts or rigging I use a Highlighter Pen to mark off on the plans what parts I have done,
Cheers Andy

Hi Andy,
Thank you for your reply. I’ve found that everything I’ve done to date has required some “research”. I’m progressing from no knowledge to a little knowledge. The Forum is a fantastic source for information. I tackle different parts of the build while I’m waiting for the glue to dry on the parts I’ve completed.

Some more progress:

Finding more ways to hold the planks while the glue sets.

Still working on rudder. This side is complete. Cut the nails down to less than 2mm, lightly tapped them into pre-drilled holes and used a drop of AC to fix them in place.

One hint:
I think, that the metal ribbons of the hinges should be shorter, definitely not overhanging of the wooden part of the rudder.

Hi Uwe,

The hinges will get trimmed when I finish the other side of the rudder. I used wood glue to fasten the hinges and wasn’t sure about the bond between wood and medal, I’m thinking setting the nails in with a drop of AC will help.

You might be better using C.A. Glue to fix the hinges to the wooden rudder as well. Then when it's dry use C.A. to fix the pin heads in place, that's what I am doing on my Bon Retour rudder,
Cheers Andy

Andy,

Thank you for the response.

I trimmed the hinges with my Dremel cutting disk. The vibration loosened the hinges and the nail heads popped out. Everything was redone using the method you suggested.
Another error on my part, not to be repeated.

The ends of the hinges still need to filed flush to the wood.

Planking problems:

I’m having difficulty attaching the second planks. I’m thinking that I overdid the “sealing” of the first planking. I’m using Titebond II glue, covering both hull and the plank. The bonding of the two is not going well.

I’m going to try to rough up the initial planks with a rasp to see if that improves the glues bonding.
