Re: Need help rigging Norden cutter

<t>Hi Mike and welcome to SoS (as we refer to it). This is strange as I know I made a welcome post using my cell phone - Ha ! Even the Admin has problems sometimes.<br/>
<br/>
Anyway, I hope that others will follow in and welcome you too - I am sure that they will. We are all here to help.<br/>
<br/>
Ok, where is everybody to help Mike out ??<br/>

I have a question about planking

<t>Why do the videos I've watched on YouTube start planking at the top up then go down to the middle of the boat then the bottom of the boat why is that? Why not just start at the top and work your why to the bottom of the boat</t>

Re: I have a question about planking

<t>to make a long story short a hull is planked in 3 major sections and the goal is to end up with what is called the shutter plank just below the wales.<br/>
<br/>
At the bottom the first plank is the garboard plank. This plank is shaped to set the run of the lower planks. Once you have the run or sweep of the planks you set in the bottom planks. This belt of planking adjusts the space from midship to the ends by tapering the planks. the idea with this belt is to slowly adjust the planking run from the sweep of the bottom planks to the sheer of the wale. The upper belt of planking matches the sheer line set by the cap rail, There is often a slight difference between the caprail sheer and the sheer or sweep of the wales. This belt of planking is separate from the hull planking band it sets its own sheer or run.<br/>
<br/>
<br/>
One major rule in planking a hull is all the runs of planking go from the stem to the stern post. I have seen it many times where a builder runs out of room at the stem and the final plank fall short and end under the wale. This is incorrect</t>

Re: I have a question about planking

<t>I'm sorry I'm new to wooden boats I don't under the terms you are using. See if I got this right you set the top middle and bottom planks then shape the rest of planks as needed correct?</t>

Mike,

Take time to read some of this material about how to attach images to your Build Log:

Hi Mike. You ask about rigging (i.e. the ropework) and planking. Exactly what stage are you at and I am sure that we can help you.

Here is my completed Norden from Billings.

Looks fantastic. I like the weathered look you did on this.

Mike

I like your build and impressed as other members are to.

I as I know other members will help with advice on your next build.

What is your next model ship going to be.

Cheers
Geoff

I haven't decided yet it is either going to be the lady Nelson or the Bluenose Schooner the first one. My goal is to make the Constitution and other warships in that time frame

Mike

There are lot of thing to look with build a model Ship.

In my case with my mamoli USS Constitution was price. Mamoli burnt down and I am I connon short. It is also for Advanced Modeler which I am not but will get plenty of advice. I have made some bad mistake with the build and consider all advice as positive criticism.

A forum like SOS where the members are very friendly and are willing to share and hep with advice is important.

Take your time and make a decision. Have a look at models and check.

I look forward to seeing what you decide on. You are the Captain of your ship.

Cheers
Geoff :D

No the right way to Plank the is Following: First indert on list about 2 mm below the main deck. tnen the next on the bottom, fastern to the keel the 3th one is a helping list set in the middle about- avoid the moment of the bulkhead. do not glue it, as it may have to change place.
now 2-3 list just beliw the 1th one, the down to the bottom with another 2-3 list and so on, until they more and less meets on the middle.
