3D printing carvings

Your work brought me to this site , have been a boat nut for years at 63 it still is amazing . Some 3d drawings are they more accurate ?

well depends on more accurate than what?

3d printed carvings depend on the artist that drew the original and created the print file. There is a little wiggle room for interpretation of the drawings but for the most part they are accurate to the original.

looking at the 3D modeled steam engine in the link it is accurate down to hinges on the doors and every nut, bolt and rivet all to exact scale. post #38 in the topic

Creating 3D print files is not something the average model builder can do it requires a back round in art, drafting, understanding of 3D modeling programs and 3D printing. To commission an artist to either create the 3D model for printing or CNC carving is very expensive so that makes it a little cost prohibitive as a one off piece of work.
there is also a difference, what I am doing with the steam engine modeling is mechanical engineering and modeling that is working with shapes. for carvings, figureheads etc that is organic modeling more like sculpture and requires more artistic talent. This is model engineering you work by the numbers

if your carving by hand (you can see work here on the forum done by master carvers) or your creating 3D carvings with computer programs both require a high degree of natural artistic skills. You can teach it to a certain degree but it is more of enhancing natural talent.
