    HMS Prince 1670 1:48

Put my post on the wrong thread. Sorry. Pete

    is a bearding line necessary?

I thought I could do away with the bearding line too but that's not the case. It's easy enough to do the garboards along the hull by sanding the edge of the board and pushing it up flush with the hull and the keel but it's another whole ball game on the stem and stern posts. Take the time to...

    Caldercraft HMS Victory Build

Planking both sides together keeps the hull from twisting or warping. Sure hope that didn't happen to you. Nice build and the Victory is a big model. I always thought the hull was too big for the amount of rigging the ship has. Someday I'll build that model. Nice work. Pete

Hello from South Africa. Sort of...

As many times as I have looked up Dymchurch I never knew that FB had a page for them. Must be fairly new as there aren't very many posts. Good tip Mike. Thanks very much.

Hello from South Africa. Sort of...

Wow! I didn't know you could do that. I need to take a look there myself and see if I can find my grandfathers name and my great Grandfather too. They were both in the guard but I don't think they were there together. My grandfather, Henry McGill, jumped ship from the Royal Navy supposedly when...

Hello from South Africa. Sort of...

Well I guess I wasn't that far off after all. Great to have you with us Shellback. Interesting story too. My grandfather was in the Royal Navy as a signalman a long time ago. His father was in the British Coast Guard at the Heath barracks near Dymchurch on the South coast. Pete

I thought a "shellback" was a guy who had crossed the equator in the US Navy. I probably have that wrong since I was in the Army.

    The Great Republic 1:48

I need to add one thing here about the saw bearings. While waiting for the new bearings to arrive I bought a pair of snap ring pliers and took the old bearings out of the machine. The one that seized up was completely stuffed full of saw dust and didn't turn at all. The others were still turning...

    The Great Republic 1:48

The shelf part is 1' x 14' with a 4' x 4' square on each end. Single track around the out side and switching in both ends as well as the narrow part. I don't really have a plan, just some ideas and let the thing grow as it will. This stuff is so expensive any more that I am limited greatly by my...

    The Great Republic 1:48

Took a few more pictures and decided that as long as this was "show and tell" I may as well show the railroad and other ships as well. Starting off are three pics of the GR from the bow to stern and then stern to bow. Also one of the few frame locations at the stern still to be done. I see that...

    The Great Republic 1:48

Hi Rob, yes and no. Ha! I have almost finished making all new frames but again, I ran out of wood. I still have to do the last four or five frames at the stern and I spent some time aligning the bow so the plank sheer would be correct. Actually I found that I had omitted one frame accidentally...

Dear Shellback. When did you get the name and do you remember where you were?

    Ratlines - distance

Try about 1/4 " and see how that looks. It's easy to measure that on a scale boat then trying to make the rungs every 14" and a foot is close enough.

Glad to have you with us Quintin. Your job sounds interesting so maybe you will post some pictures of what you do and your models too. The views of a diver will be something new for us I think. Welcome from Florida.

I forgot you were going to paint it. I get carried away with dark wood like mahogany or walnut and I just have to stain it or put clear over it. Love that shinny wood.

    The Great Republic 1:48

Hi Uwik and thanks for your comment. I have noticed that a lot of ship models here and online in general use plywood for the ribs or the bulkheads. I don't see why that wouldn't be ok for this model too. The frames are a little bigger than the prototype would have been but that will make for a...

    Endurance by OcCre 1:70

Looking at the pictures above I see that the narrow parts are close to the ends of the planks. Can you cut that narrow part off and just use the good parts? Is there enough lumber with the kit to do that? The planking looks really nice except for the tiny thin slits in the mahogany. Gonna be a...
