    Stern Adornments

Hello Boys Could someone please suggest what type of finish to put on these wooden adornments? The details are very good and obviously, the paint will cover up the intricate lines, etc. I’m tired of pondering the possibilities and now turn to the experts. Thanks John

    Chain Plate

I bought some after market chain plate assemblies from Mantua. My brain must be losing cells. Could someone draw a quick sketch of how the “dog bone” piece attaches. There is a hole at each end for a nail. Thanks

    Will it work?

I have a dowel that is 2 inches longer than my lathe can handle. To me this is the best way to shape a mast. I want to cut the dowel so it will fit on the lathe and then reattach the cut off piece using glue and a smaller dowel. The cut part will be below deck and never seen. Does this sound...

    Square ? Footage

Hello boys I am used to figuring out square footage when working on wood projects to buy the right amount of board feet. However I am at a loss trying to figure out how many strips of wood I will need to do the deck of an upcoming project. Is there a way to figure this out so I don’t overbuy or...

    Soldering

Hi guys I couldn’t stand soldering in high school and I’m pretty sure my stance hasn’t changed. I need to do some soldering on brass hinges. I’ve been looking at irons on Amazon along with solder, flux, etc. I’m looking for opinions on what iron to buy and what size solder (I assume the...

    Let’s Bond

Because of a screw up I made I decided I couldn’t live with I started some de-construction on a model. I used the same method as always: heat gun to melt the glue and then remove the affected pieces of wood. All of the pear wood came off easily. With two pieces left I carried on. These last two...

    Not a 60’s Band

I’ve been pondering what to use as a moulding on the stern of a model. Has anyone ever used banding for this purpose. I’ve used it many times on furniture projects and it looks quite good in my opinion. I know it’s not historically correct by a long shot but just doing a poll here.

    You crack me up!

My wife uses a product called Crackle on her stained glass projects. It does what it’s called, makes the project looks aged and cracked. Do you guys think if used on some stern windows of a model it would be noticeable or a waste of time and effort? One more thing; Happy New Year!!!!

    Low Low tech

I was about to buy what I would call a miter cutter before Christmas. It was advertised as made in Canada with free delivery for $175. Then I realized that the price was in US funds. With the monetary exchange and tax this came to a whopping $268. Made in Canada but in US funds. Okay. I then...

    Beware the Coffee

Please let me know if you think it’s time I give the hobby up: Today I was applying linseed oil to my ship model, second coat, while enjoying a nice cup of coffee. About 15 minutes into it I noticed the oil looked quite different on the hull. Replaying it in my mind it was obvious that I had...

    Any train guys here?

I have placed hobby “coal” in a stove for my model. How do I make it look like the fire is roaring? Or at least some indication that the coals are lit. Thanks Never been a train guy

All you get is a lump of coal

Hello Guys I know one of you have the answer to this: I bought some crushed coal to use in a model stove. The instructions say to use “scenery adhesive”. What the heck is that? I need to make sure it isn’t going to be flying all over the place. I heard somewhere a long time ago hair spray acts...

    Nuts and bolts

After finding out that nuts and bolts were invented in the 1400’s I have a question for you historians. Were these ever used as methods of attachments on 18th century ships? I was thinking possibly in/on the keels. The reason I ask is that I came into possession of some scale bolts and nuts...

    Eye See

Looking to buy a “headband magnifier”? I think that’s what it’s called. If you have input on this please advise what model is the best in your opinion. I’ve been checking out what is available on Amazon but it’s difficult to tell which ones are better than the others. Thanks John

    You know the Drill

Do you guys know a source where I can buy let’s say 12 micro drill bits of the same size, in this case .5 mm? On Amazon I’ve bought sets of micro drills but I need more than one of this size. Thanks John

    Don’t get stung!

Has anyone used beeswax as a finish on a model? I don’t mean something in a can that says “contains beeswax “. I mean pure only beeswax. I have a large bag of the solid product that I think might make decks etc. look pretty good.
