About the Book

The Batavia is probably one of the most inspiring ships built in modern history. Reconstructed without any plans available. Master Shipwright Willem Vos started his research to build the Batavia in the 1970 ’s. He studied old paintings and stock-lists, all around Europe, he visited museums alike. After his research was completed he made hundreds of detailed sketches of all parts of the ship. With those, the reconstruction of the Batavia began. The construction plans included in this book were made AFTER the Batavia was completed! May you enjoy the images and drawings as much as I did enjoy photographing and designing the books about this unique ship. The Last East Indiaman - Batavia PS: Owners of this book will receive a FREE download of the High-Resolution digital files of the full-size scans of the construction plans. Just contact us with the details provided in the book.

I had the pleasure of visiting the Batavia when she was in Sydney over a decade ago. What struck me was the enormous captains cabin with high ceilings, the very low deck ceilings to the main hull and the stifling airless heat of the interior of the ship. Granted it was summer but it must have been very oppressive living shipboard in the tropics in olden times.
I also have visited the West Australian Shipwrecks Museum in Perth where the remains of the original Batavia and its artefacts reside and documents it’s tragic history. A fantastic museum to visit. They have virtually the Batavia’s entire cargo on display including the stone decorative entrance gate that was destined for the Dutch Fort in Batavia but never made it. A large portion of the ships stern and many timbers have survived and are on display. What is striking is the unusual bent stern hull planks that bend around to also plank the transom. I like kits because you get everything you need, but I am at a point in building ships that I really need to move towards scratch building. I have the tools and I have builds I would like to do that aren't made in kit form or the kits not very good. I have the drive and determination to move to another level so why not. I'm gonna sleep on this I like the ship so that's a big +
