U.S.S. United States - Revell 1:96 plastic / wood bash

Postby popeye » Thu May 08, 2014 9:56 am

I had started this build a while ago........time marching on the way it does, and through sad events with the site, it has disappeared from the cue. since then, I've been picking at it here and there. as anyone who has even built these large scale Revell kits.......the decks lead a lot to be desired. I plan to change all that, making them from wood, and I'll also be replacing as much as I can in the process. I have seen what quite a few folks have done with the Connie kit.....I don't know if I'll go to that extreme, but I will try to add in stuff that the kit lacks. this kit is a spin-off from the Revell Constitution kit.....they eliminated the parts for the stern quarters and added in the parts to build up the exterior...the extra galley badges and the poop deck. I want to add in the parts that were omitted, and detail the stern out as much as I can.

at the moment, I'm planking the decks........I will start from the beginning, to bring you up to date with the progress. bear with me please, as I do this....I know it sounds crazy, but I yam wot I am ;-)

this build started in 2012.......I got this kit from E-bay. I had built this kit before back in 1995 {around there sometime}. the existence of this ship wasn't that long, it became dusty, and lets just say that my method for cleaning it shouldn't be repeated by anyone. I thought to let the wind clean it for me, and it fell four feet to the asphalt driveway below........the wind blew it off the porch. I had looked for another kit, but this seemed to be a rare kit. it wasn't until 2009 / 2010, that a friend alerted me that there was one on e-bay. thinking that I was going to pay out the nose for the kit....I put in a high bid {the admiral was going to kill me if it went through}......of $89.01......just shy of what the kit originally cost. I won the bid.......I paid less than $50.00 for the kit, S&H included.

you'll notice that I did not do a lot of painting on this build.....the multi colored plastic made this easy to do....and still look good. I did do quite a bit of the detail paint to her though......with the studding sails, she was an impressive build. the kit remained in the closet for a year of two.....I had started the Gothenborg build by this time.....2011, I think. I had progressed into the build fairly well.......when someone made the comment that the Gothenborg looked like a hospital ship......no cannons {long story}. that's when the box first opened and glue was involved. I pulled out the cannon parts and began putting them together. I figured at this time, I should show the kit to everyone.

the kit sports no decals.......has pre molded ratlines, and sails. everything looks good in the box. I plan to make the decks from wood, planking them. I also plan on redoing the ratlines and replace as much as I can with wood. as for the reason why this kit came out of the closet......there are no pictures of the Gothenborg with cannons on her......I got caught in the nostalgia

I took a look at the blogs and it seems like you will replaced almost everything except the outside shell. That is a lot of work for plastic. You are a real glutton for punishment.
Happy modeling,
Gary Maple

Problems are just challenges waiting for your solution.

thanks Gary ;-) I won't be replacing everything........I may still use the decorative fife rails and stuff.......it's still early yet. quite a few of the early blogs are mainly about cutting out and setting up the deck platforms. the thickness is pretty good, so the gun deck is going to fit nicely. I'll be posting a few pictures and blogs to bring this up to date. I know I started a log on her a while back, but what happened really isn't that important. I'll do more on her soon.

I thought you already knew I was nutz :)

since I started this build in 2012.......I just picked and poked at it. I was able to try a few experiments in an effort to replace some of the plastic parts with wood.

some of experiments proved fruitful.....some didn't. since you'll be able to access the logs from the previous post, I will post the pictures.....but I will date the post so the appropriate log can be found {I hope}.

11-21-2012

the build behind the hull turned to be the Phylly C...........I compared the size of the build with the Gothenborg, which is at 1:100 scale. 1:96 is a heck of a differencce

I just did a bunch of tinkering with the kit, putting more of the cannons together and painting them. I also took a look at the decks, to figure out the best game plan, to fashion them from wood
