Holiday Harbor fleet - 1:20 scale - semi scratch

Postby popeye » Thu May 28, 2015 3:42 pm

https://fantasydrydock.wordpress.com/20 ... i-scratch/

nestled in my rantings......somewhere {even I had to do a search to find where I had mentioned it}, I had mentioned this build. it was to be a build consisting of three boats, all with a Christmas theme. the hulls were made from the templates I saved from the Boulogne Etaples.......once the hulls are fully planked, the semi part of the build stops and the scratch part of the build will take over. Believe me.......I was surprised that this build isn't posted. I will do my best to catch this build up to it's present progress

I will add more soon.......but I do have to spill the beans ahead of time. one of the hulls has left the trio. I was at an impasse....I did not have a subject for the third boat. I will continue the story in the finished build forum ;) enjoy!

I have several builds on the go at the moment.....it works for me. when one is drying, or I encounter a problem, I'll put it aside and ponder while I work on something else. I was hoping to have this build completed by the 2015 Christmas season, but it didn't go as I had planned. so now, I look forward to the 2016 season.

yea........that far back. I have plans for the warming cabin. it will be lighted and have stained glass windows. I continued with this build through the month of December.

the month of January yielded even more progress......the making of the stained glass and the roof. the roof became an interesting saga.......even I wasn't happy with it, in spite of all the work that went into it.

February was a very busy month........the stained glass turned bittersweet.........it came out well, just not as I would have expected. the roof went through a transformation. the warming cabin too went through a drastic change....this came out better than I thought it would.

this brings the build up to date.......much progress has been made on the Jingle belle. the Tree Boat was still under wrap, on a shelf under my table. it has since been brought out, and the hull planking has been continued. I want to finish the hull planking....get her sanded and prepped for paint, perhaps even flesh out the deck a bit. .....bring her up to speed with the Jingle Belle.........perhaps I can think up a snappy name for her in the meantime. thanks for looking in.

Inventive and nicely executed model. Very well done.
Happy modeling,
Gary Maple

thanks Gary.........I wish I could have snapped my fingers, and came up with the whole concept, like I did with the M&M boat. there is so much to the subject, that it's hard to nail down a concrete concept for this one. I think the Tree Boat will be a bit easier to do. if you read the complete log, my hat's off to you.......you saw quite a saga. all three came to the 'crossroad', the hull dubbed 'Larry' going off to become the Andrea Gail {I was dying to do that boat ;) }, and the pick up of the build, after a year of dormancy. I've turned the focus now on the Tree Boat...finishing the planking from the state that I left it in. hopefully, I can get that done and sanded, get it primed and with any luck painted.......and get her up to snuff with the Jingle Belle. most important.......get a freak'in name for the Tree Boat! :D :D :D

thanks for the good word Gary......and for looking in :)

Hi Popeye, on your holiday boat (interesting concept btw) why on earth would one have door knockers on the doors? I suppose Blackbeard or Captain Kidd could drop by anytime.

hi Eric........the door knockers are just decoration. I thought about the old Jacob Marley / Scrooge thing...and that's what popped into my head. I got the lion's faces from Corel. I am doing the Half Moon by Billing, and JCT was building the Corel kit. they are for the tack lines on the fore and main lower sails......and they looked so cool. I wrote to corel and told them what I would be using them for, and they sent me ten of them @ no charge.

I had extras.........that's basically it.........didn't want a good idea to go to waste :)

where in the heck does time go? I got to the point with the Jingle belle, where the basic deck is laid out. no I just have to fill it. the pilot house still needs to be done......but I thought I'd bring out the tree boat and finish the planking on it. I also did a bit of modifying on the bow....I changed my mind as to where I'd go with that aspect.

I'm currently waiting for the weather to improve.......I really want to get in the garage. it was so nice to have that one day in there.......I want more!

Enjoy!!!
