SS James Craig ex Clan Macleod

Postby kiwibob » Thu Aug 21, 2014 2:39 am

Hi Guys,
here are some images of the latest build from my shipyard she is the James Craig original build 1884 in Scotland. Its been a interesting build as there are no plans so have worked from photos as she still sails in the Sydney harbor. I also a very good photo of her as she was when first in the water. This model is for the great grandson of the original Captain William Alexander as Master and a crew of 17

Looks like you have a nice work area. You must hqave been modeling for many years to try and build this from pictures only.
Happy modeling,
Gary Maple

Been modelling for 55 years it seems like a long time but it isnt its gone in a instant!!
The workshop I built with all this in mind, it also has a office/ library. Maybe a forum on workshops would be interesting

Very nice little model! :D There are plans out there somewhere. Someone was building one on Model Ship World and posted an image of the plans laid out on the table. Maybe he got them from whoever runs the ship!

Further to the above, here is a link to the model with images:

It is a much larger model than yours. The plans he posted some time ago are Sail, deck layout, profile and lines and looked like copies of the original. Maybe if you registered there, and asked him, he could tell you where he got them from.

Hi Bob,
Thanks for the info I have the rigging plan ex NZ Maritime museum which is helpful, the model hull is 300 mm long its taken a 9 months to this point just to start on the running rigging then I will build a stand etc. I have found it to be a very interesting build and to have her in the flesh so to speak just across the ditch has been quite helpful.
Ive had a look on the site and its a great model but needs to be finished!! will see if he has plans. I have heard that the restoration took place with very little plan info on the ship itself. There is a great book out with good info but no plans except for a rigging diagram.

Hi Popeye,
Most of my ships are built from photos and internet info if available I can get the scale fairly close from good images. I think the biggest problem here is the lack of information this is a country with very little documented info even though there was a thriving marine boat building industry they seemed to build from memory and no plans , but I find it as good way to keep the brain active.

Hi All,
Have been doing more work on the James Craig making double and triple blocks at 1.5 mm x 2 mm with .05 and .04 holes drilled thru and also single blocks at 1 mm x 1 mm x 3 mm then threading up for the running rigging (light colour thread).
Still more to do but there is progress !!

Taking shape nicely. Amazing what the rigging does to bring a ship to life.
