How much do you purchase

Post by jct » Tue Feb 04, 2014 3:59 am

I'm planning a scratch build of the Hannah from some plans found on the internet and am just curious. I'm thinking of purchasing small items, dead-eyes & belaying pins primarily, maybe the guns as well.
A question for all you scratch builders, how many finished items do you purchase, and which suppliers would you recommend as a source for those items?

I have just ordered some blocks from this company since they seem to be done really well.
http://www.syrenshipmodelcompany.com/
For dead eyes, i like the Amati ones and can get those from www.agesofsail.com
They also carry the rigging line.
Another company that I get line from is http://www.pielcraftsmen.com/
This company is picking up the Model Shipways rigging line and carries the A. J. Fisher products.
Happy modeling,
Gary Maple

Hi J,

That's a good question. On the two completed scratch builds I've done, the New York Pilot Boat Mary Taylor and the Private Armed Schooner Lively, 1813, I made everything except belaying pins. I motivated myself with the idea that I'd never have a better opportunity to scratch build an entire model than with these lightly rigged schooners. I'd need the fewest blocks, deadeyes, etc. But a lot of scratch builders use pre-made parts and that's perfectly fine. It becomes especially useful the bigger and more complex the subject.

I've seen many scratch built Hahn-style models with purchased parts. As Gary mentions, Syren Ship Model Company makes great blocks that would be suitable for Hannah. I'd recommend The Lumberyard for the cannons since they have the ones you'll need in 1/4" scale. The castings can be a little hit or miss sometimes, so just let them know if something's not right. They also have gratings, but they burn the h*ll out of them, and I'd avoid them if you can find a decent alternative. Their cannon carriages are nice too, but the seem overly big in some cases, so I recommend buying an extra set that's one size smaller just in case.

For other fittings, I often use BlueJacket or Amati. I haven't tried the AJ Fisher stuff yet, though I have their catalog.

Hope that helps!

Clare

Thanks much Clare, and all you fellows, lots of good information. I'm trying to decide whether to wait and procure all I need prior to beginning or to start and keep cycling back to it when the mood and materials allow.
