the Denny-Zen / scratch built lobster boat

Postby popeye » Tue Jan 22, 2013 6:09 am

you might have seen this boat, along with her sister, the Phylly C. the idea to do it came from when I realized that I had wandered too far away from the subject of the initial build. the plans are very good, although I should have made up a couple of extra ribs for the frame, since I planked it rather than do the skin, like the first build. I really had a bit of a problem when it came to the turn towards the bow......but with a little reinforcement, it went OK. the only difference I plan to do on this one though, is a more shallow helm room 'box'.

here are just some highlights from the build, up to where I am now. if you would like to read any of the build logs I've done on her, you can go here:

Looking really good. Nice work. Like you said on world press, she looks read to prime.
Happy modeling,

thanks for the good word Gary. I will post the other pictures......I lost the server this morning. it's at the point now where the helm room 'box' is in place. it's still a bit rough.......I'm in the process of making more sanding sticks, in different grits. as mentioned, the idea is to leave this build as 'worked' as possible.

Very interesting. I like the one where the front planking forms a v. Neatly done.

actually, they both do Gary......the only difference is that the Denny-Zen has regular 1.8mm planking, with no deck platforms under it at all.....and the Phylly C has 0.7mm Annegre planking on the sheer deck and the interior deck floor. her decks are left in natural wood. the Denny-Zen's is painted flat white. thanks for the good word Gary ;-)

I really enjoy your ship builds. You put so much craftsmanship and detail into every model. Two very nice looking builds.

thanks Bob.......that reminds me....I neglected to show her with the helm room 'box' on her. let me see......yepper! here they are! looks a lot better now with the helm fleshed out. it's not as deep as the Phylly C, but I might add a small inner wall there as well, along with a sloped addition to the port side. I still have a few other ideas I want to throw at her. thanks for the good word Bob! :handgestures-thumbupleft:
