mystery trawler - semi scratch 1:33 scale

Postby popeye » Fri Mar 30, 2012 8:21 am

I have been waiting for what seems an eternity, for the proper tools to do this. I have an idea, born from the time that I opened the Gothenborg kit. what if I was to save the part's panels from the kit.....being very careful not to damage them......trace out the parts on suitable plywood......and cut them out to create another hull? it has been since last father's day....I have been waiting to get a band....or even a scroll saw. I got tired of waiting.......

I began this in February. I set up my jig saw in a way that would have most carpenters scratching their heads.....and set out to put my idea into motion. I do not advocate the use of this tool........the inaccuracy is unnerving and perplexing to say the least......but the deed is done.....I have a box full of parts. I did do something a bit different though......I made the hull longer......by some 105mm, give or take a few mm's. my wife thought i was crazy......still does by my observations.......I fear the jacket is not too far away.

here is the link to the dry dock....it tells the tale and shows the whole process until now......complete with how I countered the inaccuracies that I came across during this assembly. I also include here, pictures of the hull before sanding, and the comparison shots with the Mary Ann, to which the hull was modeled from. I will caution you though.....have a drink with you....mixed or otherwise.....and perhaps something to snack on......there are a few logs here.

there is no name for her yet........this is where the 'semi' part of the build ends......the deck and the fittings will be all mine :handgestures-fingerscrossed:

Hi Popeye,

I’ll have a surprise for you in the next build log…..I promise…….it will be really cool to see!

Why does one always have to wait for the next buildlog to see the surprise :crying-green:

Popeye.........As for a name of your new ship................... Why not just give her the name Olive Oyl or Swee'Pea

With your skills and knowing what you can do, I have all the confidence in you to make this another beautiful ship :handgestures-thumbupleft:
Good luck with the build and thanks for the buildlog.

sorry Sjors.......I tried to get it on here as soon as I got the hull prepped. I had to get it to this point, so the comparison could be done in a tasteful manner.

have fun reading them........here is one of my concepts for the build

Hello Popeye,

The Nordepic is a very good choice for the concept.
I enjoyed reading your buildlog and looking forward to more progress.

Good luck from me too and happy modeling.

Take care,

Anja :happy-sunshine:

thanks Sjors and Anja.......this is a milestone....... it can be done. with the proper tools, I'm sure I can create more parts that are more exact. I just wanted to get this on here, so you all could see it. I have tabled it for the moment though......I have to get decking material and a few other things before I can continue anyway. I want to throw some time at the Gothenborg and get that back in the works. should I do anything on it though.....I will update

Hi Popeye

This will be interesting to watch, nice ship. Looks like a very old boat ?
We all should have lived closer to eachother, think of the fun we could have :music-rockout: And we would have a gathering of experience, and tools close :)
I am dreaming :banana-dance:

thanks for the good word Borge.......that would be very interesting...and a very humbling thought, I am so proud to know folks like you ;-)

thank you as well Gary. once I get the deck planking, I can continue. today I got to see a program on TV about trawlers and draggers.....if I could have seen the whole show, I shudder to think of all the ideas that get from it.If I do anything until then.....I'll be sure to post it :D

I do have another project I would like to do, but I need to get a saw for the parts because I have a lot of altering to do with them......but, that for the near future.
