Galley Washington Plans Bash

Post by JosephH » Sat May 20, 2017 2:48 am

I came home this weekend (working out of town these last 8 weeks) and my plans for the Galley Washington from the Nautical Research Guild was sitting on my desk. Now these are the type of plans I am used to working with, so while I cad the couple other ships up I wanted to do I will be be building this one.

However the plans show Lateen sails and I want to do her in a Brig rigging as was used in Europe and med as Privateer/Pirate ship. (still trying to make grandkids happy with their pirate ship)

so my question is How to you calculate what the mast and yard sizes would be for a ship?

is there a link somewhere that tells how they come up with the data?

I have a couple other small ships but they don't have full masts only cut off ones and would like to figure the masting out for them also.

any help be appreciated

So when got home for the weekend went over to see the grandkids and got slammed with when going to start their pie rat ship.

So i asked them what I should call it and what all they wanted on it. So I guess the ships name will be Resident Evil lol I knew i liked these kids they think like me.

So I also downloaded the Monographie for it and ran in today and had the plans scanned in at a blueprint company I use. so tonight I will trace my parts and start on the keel

Ok I got started with the plans the first step was to trace the false keel and the bow pieces.

as with anything there's a slight though negligible distortion due to paper shrink/expansion so I fixed this. we talking hundred of thousandths of an inch so nothing to worry abt except with cad I can fix this.

Next I will draw the top view and then start creating all the parts for a virtual bow.

Well working on the Keel the notches for the hull stations are evenly spaced however when I set it up the drawings aren't equal for some reason might just be stretch of the paper

Ok Next will be the Sternpost and aft deadwood. I am not sure why the deadwood is in so many pieces but oh well that's the way it is shown

cause the plans call for Lateen sails and I will be doing the Brig sail version and making it closer to the european/med pirate ships they used them for. in the americas at the time they used lateen sails for some reason and very few pirates in carrib and america used them. but in the european and med they were pirate favorites due to the fact they could row up and sneak up on ships without the big tell tale canvas showing but with the brig sails they were very fast when giving chase

thats excellent work. Perhaps you could do a production run of laser cut parts for members wanting to build that model ?
