Constructo Albatros 1840

Postby Anja » Mon Jan 30, 2012 2:15 pm

Hello everybody,

Albatross, originally named Albatros, was a sailing ship built as a schooner at the state shipyard in Amsterdam, Netherlands in 1920, to serve as a pilot boat in the North Sea.
The slender shape of the hull and the relatively smooth lines of the deck were copied from the French frigates, which frequently sailed into ports on the American coasts during the war of indepence.

The first schooners which were built in Baltimore quickly established themselves on both coasts of the USA and later in other areas as well. On the west coast they were used for carrying timber and on the east coast mainly for ship coal.

A little progress,

The frames are in place, but not glued yet. So, back to work.

I know that for sure Popeye.
And you know what?
She is more upstairs then in the livingroom :)
But she loves it, so it is no problem.

My progress so far.

The frames are glued in place on the false keel. The stem wedges are also in place. After making sure the lower formast and the lower mainmast fitted in their corresponding drill holes on deck, the deck was glued on and secured with rubber bands (no tie rips at hand) and tacks. The tacks I will remove after the deck has dried.

Next on the to-do list: Filing the edges of the frame, keel and stem wedges to ensure a good fit for the hull planking. The Albatros has a plank-on-bulkhead construction.

Hi Popeye.

The plastic assortment case is indeed very cool. Mine is still empty, because I just stole it from Sjors's fish bag :o
He doesn't know yet, so don't tell him

The fairing is done, and I started with the hull planking. But I'm having a hard time fitting the planks.
As I said earlier, the Albatros has a plank-on-bulkhead construction. So the planks are a bit thicker and not so easy to bend (not even when they're wet).
So I try to let the planks (if possible) find their place on the hull by themselves. At the bow the planks has to go a little higher, so they stick out over the bow.
Does this make any sense? Hopefully tonight I can post some picture!

PS - I'm talking about what I did, but of course I mean what WE did ( :text-imsorry: Sjors)

My progress so far.

I used tacks, because the pushpins were too long and too thick to use.
I tried clamps to hold the planks in place, but they kept slipping of the frame.
When the hull planking is done the tacks will be removed and a little water put in each hole to make the wood swell up and hide the holes as much as possible.

The bow looks oké. When the planks are filed/sanded it ends up just in the center where the keel has to be placed. That's a good thing.

I've gone through the tutorial 'Simple hull planking for beginners'.
But unfortunately I did made the mistake of not faring the hull correctly at the starboard side of the stern. As you can see in pictures 3 & 4.

Next on the to-do list: Completing the hull planking, restoring the errors I've made to ensure a smooth hull.
